GRAPHIC=NONE A gun- bill that has college
police officers up in arms barely
advanced in the Senate committee today.
ENG#=1 VO-NAT
VO-NAT
*CG locator Richmond
File Tape The bill would allow Virginians
who legally carry a gun to keep it
locked up in their vehicle in public.
Supporters say it's gotten to the
point where legal gun- carriers aren't
allowed to *take* their gun anywhere
and believe the bill's necessary to
protect 2nd- Amendment rights.
College Police officers, however,
fear the bill could cause problems on
campuses.
That's because students are
notorious for leaving their cars
unlocked.
Even if the bill passes, Virginia
Tech's Police Chief says she'll
continue to enforce the school's "no-
guns on campus policy."
The measure will now be
considered by the full Senate.
Meanwhile, the legislature has
approved adding bus drivers and
teachers aides to the list of school
officials immune from certain assault
and battery charges.
It allows them to use
"reasonable" force when breaking up
fights without fear of prosecution.
It'll now go to Governor Tim
Kaine for final consideration.
