GRAPHIC=Forest Fire Firefighters have contained the


forest fire that has been burning in
Bedford County since Saturday.

The interagency team coordinating
the response made the announcement last
night.

Crews have spent the last two
days burning out the area within the
fire lines, and a spokesman says that
process went more quickly than
expected.

Residents of the area may
continue to see light smoke and
occasional flare-ups, but authorities
say the fire is cold enough and safe
enough to declare it 100 percent
contained.

Dennis Hadden pled NOT guilty in
Federal Court yesterday.

Hadden is the Ohio man charged
with providing the drugs that led to an
overdose by former W-S-L-S meteorlogist
Marc Lamarre.

Hadden's attorney says his client
pled not guilty because the government
has yet to prove Lamarre suffered
serious bodily injury.

Lamarre's system.

We won't know what it was until
the toxicology tests come back,
Phillips said.

Hadden remains in jail without

suspect on charges of murdering a Henry
County woman.

27-year-old James Herbert Dunford of
Martinsville with first-degree murder
and burglary in connection with the
death of 22-year-old Meghan Price.

Price's boyfriend told
authorities someone broke into their
home on Ashley Drive and began
shooting.

Price died the next day of a
gunshot wound to the head.

Two other men are also charged in
her murder.

jamming at a popular musical event in
the Roanoke Valley.

Every Wednesday night for nearly
seven years, musicians have been
gathering for a jam session at Mill
Mountain Coffee in downtown.

But the tradition almost came to an
end after the music industry contacted
the owners and said they were violating
copyright laws by having live music.

afford some of their required
textbooks, but that's about to change.

Textbook- Market- Reform- Act, which
will allow students to buy books
without costly supplements like CD-
ROMs and workbooks.

It will also encourage the sale
of used- books by requiring professors
to post book lists in a more timely
manner.

Student advocates say the
legislation was greatly needed, since
textbooks cost about 800- dollars a
year.

night.

discussion on Religion and the Media.

Attention quickly turned to two
presenters, Christian Keesee, the
student who draws the "Christ on
Campus" cartoon and his biggest
opponent, Black Fought, another student
who finds the cartoons highly
offensive.

Both explained their stances and
stuck by their beliefs.

An instructor who helped organize
the forum said it really helped
students understand each other's points
of view.

File Tape 17-year-old Paul Antonio Goode

was arrested Tuesday on charges of
murder and attempted robbery in the
deaths of Deborah Vaughn and Brenda
White.

The women were found dead inside
Vaughn's Tinker Creek Manor apartment
February 10th.

The other two suspects in the
case -- 33-year-old James Andrew Morell
and 19-year-old Jeremy Scott Kevin
Carter -- were indicted Monday.

Police believe Vaughn was the
target of the robbery, and that White
may have just been in the wrong place
at the wrong time.

in the James River, is NOT that of a
former sheriff's brother.

determined the bone does NOT match the

dental records of any missing person's
cases sought by the Botetourt County
Sheriff's Office.

That includes James Hall, who
disappeared in 2004, and Gene
McPherson, the slain brother of former
Craig County Sheriff, B-B McPherson.

Forensic tests showed the bone
could be DECADES old.

Neither age, sex nor race could
be determined.

A 13-year-old boy found the
jawbone last month while fishing near
his Botetourt County home.

with reckless driving after he
triggered an accident on Interstate 81
yesterday morning.

Frances Fontaine of Georgia was
driving north near Buchanan when he ran

off the road and hit a guardrail.

Police say he overcorrected and
drove into the path of an empty fuel
tanker.

The tanker ran into the median
and overturned.

No one was injured, but the
highway was shut down for a time while
the wreckage was cleaned up.

their procedures-- a year after an
industrial accident left a Roanoke man
with severe burns.

28-year-old Greg Staley suffered
first, second, third and fourth degree
chemical burns after an accident at
ChemSolv.

At the time of the accident-
Greg's family was concerned about the
city's response.


They say a delay in care worsened
his condition.

Chief David Hoback of Roanoke
Fire -EMS says the city was following
protocol-- making sure the chemicals
were contained and under control before
moving a patient.

Now when called to a chemical
situation - the city sends at least an
ambulance and a fire engine.

Before it just sent an ambulance.

will take over the post July First.

Ruscio is a W-and-L alumnus, as

Martinsville has begun a multi-million
dollar facelift for an entire block of
the downtown.

The group is transforming several
second story apartments into upscale
lofts and fixing the outside of the
structure.

Even the Lyric theatre is getting in
on the act.

The Theatre is re-creating the
comedy and tragedy masks that used to
be on the front of the building.

The renovations are underway, and
will be finished by mid-summer.
