GRAPHIC=Iraq Hostages On the heels of a Marine from our
region dying in Iraq, we learn a
Christian activist from Clear Brook in
the Shenandoah Valley has been killed.

VO-NAT 54-year-old Tom Fox was one of four
peace activists kidnapped last year in
Iraq.
The FBI verified this morning that
a body found in Iraq was Fox.
On Tuesday, Al-Jazeera television
aired footage of the other three
activists appealing to their
governments to secure their release.
Additional forensics testing on
Fox's body will be done in the States
and the US Embassy in Baghdad is
investigating.

when he was killed Tuesday by a
roadside bomb.
The 31 year old was a member of a
small elite team of Marines whose job

graduate to die in Iraq.

sending bulletins to arenas nationwide.
The F-B-I says there is no
specific, credible threat of a terror
attack aimed at college basketball
arenas or other sports stadiums.

law enforcement to a recent Internet
posting discussing such attacks.
A law enforcement official who
read the bulletin says the online
message describes a potential attack in
some detail. It talks of killing
thousands of people using suicide
bombers armed with explosives hidden
beneath their winter clothing.
But the government document also
says U-S intelligence sources could not
corroborate the information or say
whether the site was linked to
al-Qaida.

brush fire in Montgomery County.

and U-S Forest Service crews were
called to Sinking Creek Mountain at
about three this afternoon.
An official says the fire, which
was about 20 to 25 acres, was probably
started by a stray bullet from a firing
range.

Hurricane Katrina hit, the US Army
Corps of Engineers says it will be
better prepared. The group also
believes it has found out what caused a
critical floodwall to break.

Engineers say two unlikely factors,
weak soil and an eroded floodwall
coming together at once, led to the
levee breaking.
Neither was among classical factors
taken into account when the floodwall
was designed back in the eighties.
Several tools were used to help the
engineers and scientists figure out
what happened, including this machine,
used to re-create the fury of Hurricane
Katrina.
There are still many studies to do.
But the Corps says levee repairs are
on schedule and will be done by the
time Hurricane Season rolls around.

successfully did what it was supposed
to do--it started orbiting Mars.

Back in August--the two-and-a-half-ton,
21-foot tall rocket blasted off from
Florida's Kennedy Space Center.

Relatively speaking, the 310-million
mile trek was easy--this was the tough
partslowing the spacecraft down to
11-thousand miles per hour--so it could
start orbiting.

That included 1999--when the Mars
Climate Orbiter failed as it arrived at
the red planet.

This spacecraft will take pictures of
Mars and study the planet's landscape
and climate like never before.
It will also scout future landing sites
to send robotic--and maybe even one day
human explorers.
For the next seven months it will dip
into Mars' upper atmosphere to tighten
the orbit.
Then in November it will begin
collecting scientific data.
There are now four orbiters circling
the Martian planet, with this latest
NASA mission into the cosmos concluding
in the year 2010.

the State basketball tournament where
four area teams played tonight in the
Group Two A semi-finals.
The girls' matchup pitted Lord
Botetourt against Hidden Valley.

play perhaps its worst half of
basketball of the season in the opening
half.
Early on Botetourt's Courtney
Hartman missed the long jumper, but
Rebecca Mikulas cleans it up. It's 14
to 11 Botetourt at the half.
It stayed throughout - and in the
4th Cathy Wright hits this three
pointer with under a minute to play to
put the Cavs up by three points.
But Abby Oliver saved the day as
she gets the rack for the hoop and the
harm. She made the free throw and got
the game to overtime tied at 35.

40 went to work down low - and Hidden
Hidden Valley Valley barely escapes with the 43-to-40
43 win and will play Jamestown for the
title tomorrow night.

tradition to the state captial while
Bassett was back in the state
semi-finals for the first time in five
decades.
The Bengals jumped out early as
Ryan Byrd hits the fadeaway jumper from
the right side and Bassett was up 5
points after a quarter.
But back comes the Ville. Tracy
Hairston finds Quan Beamer for two of
his career high 31 points as the
Bulldogs led 31 to 25 at halftime.
The lead grew to 16 in the third
quarter as D'Andrew Jackson gets free
on the block and scores for Troy Wells.

74 But Bassett mounted a furious and
Bassett two shots to force and overtime in the
71 closing seconds, but Martinsville
survives and advances to meet Robert E.

William Fleming will name Robert
Senseney its new head football coach.
The official announcement will
come next Tuesday, and if the name
sounds familiar it should - Senseney
coached Gretna to back-to-back state
champs in 2003 and 2004 when he was the
Hawks head coach.
He spent last year at North
Stafford where he went 7 and 3 in
Triple A.
In his three season at Gretna -
his teams won Friday Football extra
team of the year honors as he led the
Hawks to a 36 and 4 record.

with Miami almost ending Duke's
tournament run.

was goalie Glenn Ridler - who was
aquired Thursday.
And Ridler would play well
tonight in his first outing in net -

support. Jan Jas will skate in a fire
on the Riverdogs net. The shot is
deflected, and Matt Miller is right
there to clean it up for the Roanoke

After more than 30 years of
service, the U-S Navy's last Tomcat
jets are retiring.
The Cold War-era F-14 fighter
jets, also known as "Top Gun" planes,
ended their final combat deployment
today.
The 22 Tomcats flew over Virginia
Beach in a giant wedge
formation before landing at Oceana
Naval Air Station.
They were welcomed by hundreds of
cheering family, friends and sailors.
Jason Stephenson has been
maintaining the Navy's Tomcats for 16
years.
