Quarry Fire has reopened -- giving some
people a close up view of the damage a
wildfire can do.
But, forestry officials say by
this summer, the view should be a whole
lot better.

Ridge Parkway in Bedford County has
been less than ideal.
Smoke covered most of the
landscape as type two wildfire crews
fought the Quarry Fire.
Now, with containment lines
holding strong and the fire burning out
in most places, the Type Two teams have
pulled out.
A skeleton crew of forestry
experts is all that's left to tend to
the blaze.

acted a lot like one of the forestry
departments prescribed burns.
Much of the undergrowth has
burned away, allowing more sunlight to
reach the forest floor.

from a fire late this morning at the
future home of Carilion's Biomedical
Institute.

fire on Jefferson street, but the smoke
could be seen billowing for miles.
Crews arrived to find fire on the
fourth floor and nine people trapped.
They were rescued from the top
floor by a cherry picker.
No one was hurt.
Officials say the fire was
sparked by combustable materials in
close proximity to welding materials.

found dead today in his prison cell in
the Netherlands.
The former Serb leader died of
natural causes at the age of 64.
Dutch authorities plan to conduct
an autopsy tomorrow.
The U-N tribunal says it will
also conduct a full investigation into
the death.
Milosevic had been on trial for
FOUR years on charges related to war
crimes -- including genocide.

members of an extended family were
killed in an early morning house fire.

Chattanooga.
Authorities say the fire
apparently started on the second floor,
where all of the victims were sleeping.
A 19-year-old man managed to
escape the blaze from the first floor.

is investigating a possible case of mad
cow disease.

official, a routine test indicated the
possible presence of mad cow.
He did not specify where the cow
was located.
The department is conducting more
detailed tests at its laboratory in
Ames, Iowa, and should have results in
four to seven days.
Officials say the cow did not
enter the human or animal food chain.
In humans, eating meat products
contaminated with mad cow disease has
been linked to more than 150 deaths
worldwide.

Basketball Team had a chance to bring
home a Group Double "A" State
Championship. The Titans were riding
an 18 game winning streak heading into
their Title Tilt against Jamestown who
came in sporting a 28 and 2 overall
record.

Early on Abby Redick would go to

goes down the lane for the bucket and
the foul.

miss, but Bre Barrineau would clean up

given the fans much to cheer about this
season. But tonight, was a time to
celebrate and honor a couple of players
who made the old Hockey Days Great.

The Vipers retired the number 16
of Dave Schultz and the number 32 of
their current head Coach Daniel
Berthiaume. Also on the bottom of
Bert's banner is the name and number of
the late Terrence TooToo.
Berthiamue was a mainstay in the
net for the Roanoke Express and helped
the Franchise to some of the best
seasons in their history. He spent 10
seasons in the N-H-L with 5 teams.

1969-70 Season Rebels during the 1969-70 season. With
the nickname, the Hammer you know
Schulz was known for being an enforcer.
He moved on to the Philadelphia Flyers
and was part of the Broad Street
Bullies that won a Stanley Cup.
Schultz set a record for penatly
minutes in the 1974-75 season.

into the Semi-finals this afternoon and
Duke was looking for it's 9th straight
trip to the Finals. 12th seeded Wake
Forest standing in the way.

Blue Devils vs Demon Deacons J.J. Redick played all 40 minutes
in the quarterfinals that wouldn't be
the case in the semi's
Redick had to leave the game in
the first half with a bruise on his
knee. He would return to score 20
points for the game.
J.J. got some help from his 2
freshman, Greg Paulus and Josh
McRoberts. Both hit Double Figures in
the game for the Blue Devils
Wake Stayed close for a half but
couldn't keep up their magical run as
the lowest seeded team in the tourney.

Duke for the title at 1 o'clock

at Cave Spring High School for the
title of Miss Roanoke Valley.
Jill Whelan, from the Love Boat,
and Marion Ramsey, of Police Academy,
helped host the show.
Contestants showed off their
talents by singing, dancing, and even
demonstrating yoga.
Tomorrow, girls will compete in
the first ever Miss *Teen* Roanoke
Valley Scholarship Program.
