(END SOT) OF AMERICANS TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL.

CHOLESTEROL IS WHAT CAUSES A BUILD UP
OF PLAQUE IN BLOOD VESSELS AND

LEADS TO HEART DISEASE.

STATINS HAVE SHOWN EFFECTIVE IN
LOWERING CHOLESTEROL ENOUGH TO SLOW
DOWN

OR EVEN STOP THE DEPOSITS.

BUT, FOR THE FIRST TIME, DOCTORS THINK
THE DRUGS MAY ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO

REVERSE THE EFFECTS.

(Courtesy: Cleveland Clinic)

IN A NEW STUDY THE CLEVELAND CLINIC'S
DOCTOR STEVEN NISSEN TOOK A GROUP

OF PATIENTS WITH HEART DISEASE AND GAVE
THEM THE MAXIMUM DOSE OF A

STATIN CALLED CRESTOR.

CRESTOR'S MAKER, ASTRAZENECA, HELP FUND

AFTER TWO YEARS THE AVERAGE PATIENT
ACTUALLY LOST AROUND EIGHT PERCENT

accumulation of cholesterol plaque in

the coronary arteries and we've never
been able to acheive that before

with a statin therapy."

(STANDUP: Dr. Mallika Marshall/CBS

DOCTOR NISSEN DID IT BY USING STATINS
TO DRAMATICALLY LOWER L-D-L OR BAD

CHOLESTEROL.

THE NATIONAL GUIDLINES CALL FOR AN
L-D-L OF 1-HUNDRED OR LESS.

THIS STUDY GOT IT DOWN TO AROUND 60.

EXPERTS SAY THIS JUST REINFORCES THE
IMPORTANCE OF GETTING BAD

CHOLESTEROL DOWN.

(SOT-Dr. John LaRosa/Pres., SUNY

"lowering l-d-l cholesterol is a good
thing and the lower the better and

this is one important, one more piece
of evidence that thats true." :12

WHILE STATINS CAN CAUSE SIDE EFFECTS
RESEARCHERS SAY PATIENTS ON THE MAX

DOSE DID NOT SUFFER SIGNIFICANTLY MORE
THAN USUAL.

THE NEXT STEP IS TO FIND OUT IF THIS
REVERSAL OF PLAQUE BUILDUP CAN

ACTUALLY LEAD TO FEWER HEART ATTACKS
AND STROKES.

RIGHT NOW DOCTORS ARE ASSUMING IT WILL.

(DAN BROWN ENTERING COURT) LOCATOR:

Dan Brown's not being sued...it's his
London publisher...but it's the

author's Da Vinci Code story -- and
reputation -- on the line.

London's High Court has been hearing
claims from two historians that Dan

Brown lifted THEIR ideas as the
foundation for his best selling

fictional novel.

THEIR book, a 1982 NON-FICTION work
titled " Holy Blood Holy Grail,"

explores the theory that Jesus Christ
had a child with Mary Magdalene --

and that the bloodline survives to this
day.

(ON CAMERA BRIDGE) CHARLIE
D'AGATA/LONDON

DAN BROWN HAS NEVER MADE IT A SECRET
THAT THE DA VINCI CODE IS BASED

HEAVILY ON HISTORICAL RESEARCH.

IN FACT, HE SAYS HE WENT OUT OF HIS WAY
TO MENTION THE SUING AUTHORS FOR

BRINGING THE BLOODLINE STORY TO

MAINSTREAM ATTENTION.

(graphics)

In a statement released Monday, Brown..
A NEW HAMPSHIRE NATIVE, said he

remained 'astounded' by the choice to
file this plagiarism suit....

adding ... "to say I have hijacked and
exploited their work is simply

untrue."

What is UNDENIABLY TRUE is how
dissecting Da Vinci Code fact from

fiction has in itself become big tour
business....

I FIND THERE ARE MERITS AND DEMERITS ON
BOTH SIDES WHICH ISN'T A VERY

SIMPLE ANSWER I'M AFRAID.

It COULD get serious: the court case
threatens to delay the May release

of "The Da Vinci Code" film, starring
Tom Hanks.

And so too, THIS plot thickens...the
folks suing the publishers of the

Da Vinci Code?

GRAPHIC=None Welcome everyone to your Monday

Ticker and the Virginia Cavalier's wish
they were in the N-C-A-A Tournament,
the Wahoos were happy with an N-I-T
berth. The Cavs would have liked to
have gotten a home game instead of
traveling all the way out to Stanford.
But, Considering that in Dave Leitao's
first year in Charlottesville, U-V-A
was picked dead last in the A-C-C, a
postseason berth is pretty impressive.

And just two flights down from
Haldis Gunderson's apartment in Norway,
bar employees were horrified to see
water pouring out of their beer taps.

Turns out, someone at the bar had
hooked up the hoses wrong. The problem
has since been reconnected.

Gunderson laughed about the mixup,
and joked about having the pub send up
free beer the next time she has a
party.
