parched state far below it's normal
level of rainfall for the year -- but
the back payment Texas got over the
weekend -- was something nobody wanted.

(NARR:)

Close to a foot of rain deluged parts
of Texas -- 5 inches fell in downtown
Dallas just in one day.

NAT/SOT CAR DRIVING THROUGH WATER

(NARR:)

Flash floods closed roads and collected
on rooftops -- this one -- at a
shooting range -- collapsed under the
weight of the water. No one inside was
injured.

(NARR:)

But one woman was swept downstream --
her body was found a half a mile away
in what is normally a slow moving
creek.

(NARR:)

The rains were the first real relief in
weeks for fire ravaged Texas -- but

falling at 2 inches an hour -- the fire
problem was only replaced with a series
of others.

(NAT/SOT)

Sweeping water out...

(NARR:)

The water rose so fast in some places
-- residents barely had time to get
out.

(SOT/WOMAN IN APARTMENT COMPLEX)

"Within 5 minutes people were beating
on the door telling us we need to
leave."

(NARR:)

This apartment complex turned into an
island in a matter of minutes.

"It's bad back there, and this is bad,
I've never seen it this bad before."

(NARR:)

Those super showers were topped only by

late winter snow storms that stretched
from Colorado up through the Dakotas
and into Nebraska overnight -- together
they dumped more than a foot of fresh
powder -- and has scores of school
districts all across the region closed
this morning.

Not exactly the kind of day you'd
expect for the start of spring -- a day
when most of the country will wake up
to below average temperatures -- either
digging out, or mopping up from one
last wallop from winter. Lee Cowan, CBS

With the sentencing trial of al-Qaida
conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui

resuming, the possibility of the death
penalty is back on the table.

Artist:William Hennessy Jr.

This comes after federal judge Leonie
Brinkema delayed the trial a week

when she discovered a government lawyer
made a big mistake.

That error could have led to Zacarias
getting a life sentence--something

that would not have sat well with the
families of the three-thousand

people killed on September 11th.

Prosecuting attorney Carla Martin
improperly coached six witnesses who

would have testified about aviation
related events.

(STANDUP: DREW LEVINSON/ALEXANDRIA, VA)

THOUGH THE JUDGE BARRED THOSE WITNESSES
FROM TESTIFYING, SHE WILL ALLOW

OTHER AVIATION WITNESSESSES WHO WERENT
QUOTETAINTED TO TAKE THE

STAND. THAT TESTIMONY IS CRUCIAL
BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS ABOUT HALF THE

GOVERNMENTS CASE AGAINST MOUSSAOUI.

(FILE OF ATTACKS)

Moussaou was arrested after raising
suspicions at a flight school and

pleaded guilty to knowing al-Qaidas
plans to fly planes into buildings.

Prosecutors are trying to prove that if
the so-called 20th hi-jacker had

not lied to the FBI when he was
arrested three weeks before September

11th, the attacks on New York and
Washington might have been thwarted

because airport security would have
been tightened.

The FBI agent who arrested Moussaoui is
back on the stand today as

defense attorneys cross- examine him.

Then attorney Carla martin is prepared
to tell her story.. An

explanation the defense says is

critical before any additional aviation

witnesses are permitted to testify.
