GRAPHIC=VMI If you were to visit the Virginia

wouldn't recognize the place.

Lately, the school that prides itself
on the past is thinking more about its
future.

So Justin what is VMI up to?

Natasha, it's called Vision 2039.

jmcleod@wdbj7.com That's the year VMI will celebrate
its bicentennial.

To mark the occasion, the school
unveiled a major expansion plan two
years ago and as we found out a lot of
the work is already underway.

Anyway you slice it, VMI is
undergoing a major expansion,

((QUICK NAT SOUND OF BULLDOZER))

INQ=We've done just BINFORD PEAY/VMI'S SUPERINTENDENT:

WE'RE A LITTLE OVER A 100 NEXT YEAR,
AND A LITTLE OVER 100 IN THE THIRD

RUN06 (END SOT)

OQ=in the third year Some of that money has already been

spent.

Take Nichols Hall.

VMI completely renovated the building
to enhance its science and engineering
programs.

The dinning hall is also getting a
major facelift.

Inside, you'll find a new state of

the art kitchen, function rooms, and
the renovation of the existing dining
room.

((NAT SOUND OF CONSTRUCTION AT ALUMNI

But the work that's getting the most
attention because it's located along
busy Route 11, is the upgrades to
Alumni field.

Later this summer, construction will
begin on a new leadership and ethics

The school is also getting ready to
add a third barracks.

Down the road, there are plans to
build an aquatic center (5:41:38), a
large field house (5:42:26) and a
parking deck. (5:45:41)

((QUICK NAT SOUND OF GENERAL PEAY

But some of these projects are bound
to be controversial because VMI plans
to knock down several buildings.

They include Lejeune Hall and these

You may remember VMI created quite a

stink when it knocked down the Post

As of right now, the school plans to
demolish at least seven homes and one
building.

And Natasha, General Peay says there
could be several more in the future.

QUESTION, Justin, I think you said,
VMI is already spending almost 300
million dollars . How does a school
raise that much money?

Natasha, half of it is state money,
the other half is coming from private
donors.
