GRAPHIC=None International scam artists who

Scam Alert 7 Anim. have claimed fraud victims in the New
River Valley are becoming even bolder.

ENG#=1 VO-NAT

VO-NAT Last week News 7 first told you

about a group out of Nigeria logging
onto university websites that help
students and landlords find renters for
their apartments.

Police say these people either
send checks or money orders for too
much and asked their victims to send
the difference back.

Days later the payments prove to
be fake and renters were out the money.

OQ=Holly Pietrzak, News 7. << Megan Donnally was first
(END SOT) contacted by e-mail about a room she

had for rent. It was listed online at
Radford University and Virginia Tech's
off-campus housing search.

MEGAN DONNALLY, RU STUDENT

19:54:01 HE SENT ME A CHECK FOR
3-THOUSAND DOLLARS RATHER THAN 480 AND
THAT I WAS TO GO INTO MY BANK AND CASH
IT AND THEN WESTERN UNION HIM BACK THE
MONEY. 19:54:11

With the advice of her
mother....Donnally did a little
research first. She googled the man's
name...David Martins...that's when the

fraud alerts and scam warnings popped
up.

She filed a report with the
police, but Martin's contact with
Donnelly didn't end.

It actually became
harrassing...he e-mailed her and even
called her from a blocked number
several times.

MEGAN DONNALLY, RU STUDENT

19:56:44 HE JUST ASKED ME IF I RECEIVED
THE CHECK. THAT WHEN I RECEIVED IT TO
TAKE IT TO THE BANK IMMEDIATELY AND
CASH IT AND TO SEND IT TO THE CONTACT
ADDRESS THAT HE HAD GIVEN ME. I ASKED
I HADN'T RECEIVED IT YET. WHEN I
ACTUALLY HAD...BECAUSE I KNEW WHAT WAS
GOING ON. 19:56:59

Unlike some folks who have been
scammed or come close...Donnally says
Martins gave lots of details and even
asked her to pick him up at the
airport.

MEGAN DONNALLY, RU STUDENT

19:57:44 HE FOOLED ME FOR A WHILE. I
WAS TRYING TO BE A NICE PERSON AND HELP
SOMEBODY COMING FROM A DIFFERENT

COUNTRY CLAIMING HE WAS A RELIGIOUS
PERSON AND HE WAS COMING OVER TO DO A
MISSION. 19:57:56

These scams appear to becoming
more and more elaborate. And police
are warning people if you're doing
business or advertising online....be on
guard. Holly Pietrzak, News 7..>>

But the school says it didn't know

Facilities says the exterminator
decided to use pesticide instead of
sticky traps without consulting the
school. Steven Oaks also says the
exterminator showed up early, instead
of after school, and the routine visit
didn't attract attention. But most
parents we spoke with were upset about
the pesticide but the greater issue was
what they call a lack of communication.

*i have no clue what's going on, what
to look for, what the symptoms are

*the first time I heard about this was
on the news, I wasn't notified, I'd

Oaks says that's because last week,
their focus was sending letters out to
fourth and fifth grade parents since
that's the hall that was affected.

Now, the kids have been removed from
the area and test results are pending.

Oaks tells us he talked with a doctor
from the Department of Health who says
the symptoms are a lot like the flu.
BUT had the children been exposed, they
should have felt symptoms by the time
they left school.>>

Yesterday state foresters worked
with helicopter pilots as they
practiced fighting fire from the air.

This year nearly 700- fires have
consumed more than five- thousand acres
in the Commonwealth.

The largest was the fire in
Bedford County - which scorched nearly
12- hundred acres.

Foresters say their biggest
challenge, when helping with large
fires is communicating with local fire
departments.

That's because only 35- percent
have technology to communicate with
state agencies.

Better communication is one of
several needs local firefighters
identified this year for the General
Assembly.

The governor included 12- million
dollars in his budget to help address

those needs, but the money was left out
of the House and Senate budgets.
