NASCAR Images Only about 20 thousand of the 80
thousand fans, who had purchased
tickets showed up for yesterday's rain
date.

Ryan Newman and defending champ
Carl Edwards probably wished their
alarm clocks had malfunctioned.

Both crashed, and Edwards
finished 40th.

Kasey Kahne didn't wreck, but he

did smash the NASCAR record book, as
he held off this serious challenge from
Mark Martin with 12 laps to go.

Kahne would hold off Martin, Dale
Junior and Jeff Gordon to become the
first Dodge driver since Richard Petty
back in 19-77 to find victory lane.

He's also the first driver to win
the spring race from the pole since
Buddy Baker did so in 19-79.

Kahne gets the win with Martin
second and Junior third.

Bill Lester joined Kahne, Junior and
Martin in the postrace interview
session.

Lester became the first black
driver to compete in the NASCAR's top
series since 1986.

He says he hopes that someday
people actually will talk to him
because of the way he raced, instead
interviewing him BECAUSE of his race.
