High School had their questions
answered last night.

Hundreds turned out for the
school board meeting at Northside
Middle School.
During the meeting, the school
system explained in detail why it's
taking so long to finish the new
athletic fields at Cave Spring High
School.
The school board announced that
the softball and soccer fields should
be completed in the next few weeks.
The board members also appointed
an independent party to look into
allegations that Superintendent Linda
Webber rules by intimidation.
He's scheduled to wrap up his
investigation within the next 60 days.

towards Roanoke County's school
superintendent over the past week.
Now, we're hearing from her
supporters.

They included principals,
teachers, and parents who all said
Linda Weber has done great things for
the school system.
They're also surprised to hear
some feel Weber rules by intimidation.

On Monday, Weber decided to take
a sixty day leave of absence.
Some are angry she's being paid
during that time, but the school board
chairman says Weber's contract requires
it.

students should get a letter in the
mail today with the results of
enviromental testing at a Franklin
County school.
School officials say the results
will reveal whether students may have
been exposed to a chemical
exterminators used in the building.

Meanwhile, the owner of the
exterminating company is speaking out
for the first time.
He told News 7 that his company
did not spray any insecticide inside
the school.
He says his employee put the
insecticide inside cinder blocks and
they were immediately sealed with
concrete.
He also points out there were no
children in the classroom during this
process.
He points out that National
Exterminators has been servicing
Franklin County schools for about 18
years --and there have never been any
reports of problems.

out of a job.
The company plans to lay off
110 workers at the Brookneal plant
today.
In January, Dan River
officials announced plans to cut about
500 jobs this month as it closes a
plant in its headquarters in the city
of Danville.

get the Confederate battle flag put
back on the county seal.
But county supervisors say it's a
done deal.

Virginia Military Institute yesterday.

The former U-N Ambassador became
only the second person to be given the
Jonathan Daniels Humanitarian award.
Jimmy Carter was the first.
Beyond Young's work in the Civil
Rights movement of the 1960's, he
served three terms in Congress and was
twice elected Mayor of Atlanta.
The 74-year old diplomat accepted
the award before the corps of cadets
yesterday afternoon.

Mayor can't get a fair trial in
Lynchburg.

Carl Hutcherson's fraud trial was
set to start in Lynchburg next month,
but his lawyers said it would be too
hard to find an impartial jury in his
hometown and asked for a change of
venue.
The U-S District Judge agreed and
ordered the trial to begin April 24th
in Roanoke.
Hutcherson's charged with Social
Security fraud, bank and mail fraud,
lying to a federal grand jury, and
making false statements to an
investigator.

GRAPHIC=Shooting Authorities are investigating an
accidental shooting in Roanoke County.
48-year-old Alan Rawlins was shot
in the back at around 2:30 yesterday
afternoon.
Police say the pistol discharged
while a family member was checking to
see if the weapon was clear.
Rawlins was transported to
Roanoke Memorial Hospital, he didn't
have any life threatening injuries.

unscheduled audit of the Roanoke Public
Library.

looking into what auditor Drew Harmon
called disorganized and mismanaged
office administration.
Auditors are looking into
allegations that payments weren't made
in a timely manner.
They're also trying to match
payments with invoices and in some
cases, find the invoices themselves.
Harmon says they should finish
the investigation within the next
two-weeks.
