with raping another student more than
20 years ago.

The case resurfaced when William
Beebe sent a letter to the alleged
victim apologizing for the incident.
His accuser Liz Securro says she
was raped at a fraternity house in
October of 1984.
She testified against Beebe at a
preliminary hearing yesterday. A judge
determined there was probable cause to
send the case to a grand jury.

cruise ship fire is happy to be back
home this morning.

Rhonda Price and Charles Trail's
flight landed in Roanoke just before 11
o-clock last night.
They were onboard the Star
Princess when they they were woken up
early Thursday morning by a lot of
commotion.
A fire had broken out on the
ship. The rooms across the hall were
charred.
They remained on the boat for six
more hours, but say the mood among the
passengers was calm.

caused problems aboard another cruise

Passengers were stuck for more than
eight hours yesterday waiting to be
rescued after the sternwheeler ran
aground in the Columbia River.
Crews members told passengers they
were trying to avoid a barge when they
accidentally hit the sandbar.
While this cruise was cut short, the
passengers were treated to dinner and
hotel for the night.

workers as they try to work out a new
contract.

laid-off textile workers in Brookneal
shouldn't have too much trouble finding
a new jobs.

Yesterday was the last day on the
job for 110 employees at the Dan River
plant, leaving about 300 still there.
The cut-backs are part of a larger
reorganization by Dan River which was
bought by a conglomerate based in
India.
County leaders said yesterday
there are other jobs available in the
area ... and that the laid-off workers
would be eligible for re-training and
education benefits.
Local unemployment stands at
about 3-point-2 percent.

apparently landed a low-cost carrier.
Next week, officials are expected
to announce that a new airline,
offering non-stop service to Florida,
is coming to town.

name the airline, but confirmed that a
news conference is scheduled for
Tuesday morning at 10.
While the newcomer is NOT
Southwest or Jetblue, a source with

leisure destination" in Florida.

It's been a week of strong
storms, flooding and snow across the
nation.

VO NAT Winter weather swept through
parts of Arkansas, dropping as much as
much as an inch of spring snow in areas
of the state. Much of the snow was the
light powdery kind, and didn't stick to
the roadways.
The winter storm system moved
through northwest Arkansas after
dropping two inches on various areas
across the state of Oklahoma.

VO NAT North Texas residents weren't the
only ones affected by this week's
storms that caused severe flooding.
Dozens of beavers were rescued from
overflowing debris filled creeks in
Arlington and Mansfield, Texas. Several
of the beavers were babies, only about
8-weeks old.
These baby beavers will be cared
for by a rescue group and then released
back into the wild.

Elementary is safe for occupancy.
This after concerns about a
pesticide used by exterminators during
school hours.

Elementary showed no signs of
Malathion.
But swabbed samples from the walls
where the pesticide was applied inside
cinder blocks, DID show small traces.
But in a letter to parents Franklin
County School officials stated, the
presence of Malathion does not imply
that there is enough to initiate a
human response.
It's a relief for parents awaiting
the results.

aimed at students.
But folks like R-L Thomas, a
