WHEN I SEE CHILDREN THAT MOSTLY DRINK
WATER HAVE VERY LITTLE OR NO CAVITY
ACTIVITY AT ALL, THESE CHILDREN WHO

(END SOT)

He says that's because juices are
loaded with sugar. Not only can that
sugar break down the teeth, but it's
also a food source for the bacteria
that cause cavities.

SOT FULL

THEY'RE CONSTANTLY GRABBING JUICE
DURING THE DAY. THEY'RE TEETH CAN NOT
RECOVER FROM IT WITH WHATEVER FLUORIDE
IS IN THEIR MOUTH. THEN THE BACTERIA
WILL GO TO TOWN ON IT, THEN YOU'LL
START SEEING DECAY

(END SOT)

It's become a such a huge problem
that Dr. Davis says he's in the
operating room every week treating
cavities in children five and under.

He's not telling parents they have
to cut out juices all together -- but
they should make it a treat instead of

a regular beverage.

He also recommends a few tips after
drinking juice.

SOT FULL

4:10 runs=13

A PIECE OF CHEESE IS GOOD RIGHT
AFTERWARDS IT MAKES THEIR MOUTH MORE
BASIC LESS ACIDIC SO IT'S HARDER FOR
CAVITIES TO GET STARTED. EVEN SWISHING
WITH WATER THAT'S GOING TO HELP A
LITTLE BIT JUST TO DILUTE WHAT'S ON
THEIR TEETH

(END SOT)>>

Joy Full JOY FULL

Of course brushing their teeth is
always important. One other note -- Dr.
Davis points out that it's also
important not to allow your children to
share food or drinks from another
person. That's because cavities are
caused by bacteria that can be
transferred through the saliva. If the
child never gets the bacteria they
won't get any cavities no matter what
they drink.
