chopstick. On April first...they'll
impose a five percent tax on the

tiny implements.

CELIA HATTON STAND-UP

(NAT-SOUND --snap chopsticks apart)This
is something that's done

millions of times a day in China
restaurant goers break apart a pair of

wooden chopsticks, use them once and
throw them away. It's convenient

but it's wasteful.

RESTAURANT OWNER, in Chinese with
English translation

"We use 200 to 300 pairs of chopsticks
every day, admits the

restaurant's owner."

When China's 1.3 billion people use
ANYTHING that's disposable, it

creates a lot of waste 45 billion pairs
of wooden chopsticks end up in

the garbage in China every year.

SHI WALKING DOWN STREET, CHATTING WITH
HATTON

Greenpeace activist She Pengxiang says
the tax is symbolic it's meant

to touch the lives of regular Chinese

people. ..and help save the

nation's forrests.

SHI PENGXIANG, GREENPEACE ACTIVIST.

"Imposing a 5% on disposable chopsticks
may not be much but it signifies

that the government is trying to do
something."

JAM

Other new taxes are also eco-friendly -
- cars with large engines now

have bigger price tags... and oil is
pricier too.

PEOPLE ON GOLF COURSE,

But some taxes will TAKE money from
China 's new rich golf balls and

clubs will be taxed more heavily
now.and SAVE money for the masses

taxes on shampoo and soap have been
erased. Once a luxury, these

toiletries have become household items.

NAT SOUND

But it's the chopsticks tax that's
gotten the most attention here

although locals say it won't change
their habits. It's a way of

..life.. ......something China isn't
ready ..........to throw away.
