York, and follows race fans around the
country.
But there are some local
entrepreneurs.
Take 76-year-old Martinsville
resident Virginia Blankenship.
She sews and sells her OWN

race.
As fans near the speedway, they
run into the next race day
entrepreneur.
Parking quickly becomes a
commodity the closer you are to the
speedway, but not everyone is in it to
fill their own pockets.
The Ridgeway Volunteer Fire
Department has used this make shift
parking lot for the last nine years to
raise money, and the volunteers bring
in a couple of thousand dollars every
time NASCAR is in town.

afternoon in Bedford County.

The fire was so intense, it
melted the siding of the house next
door.
There are no reports of any

house fire from last night in Roanoke
County.

response truck parked near the home on
Starmount Avenue.
Officials say it is protocol for
the those teams to respond after a
house fire occuring this close to a
creek.

Martinsville today, but not because of
overactive tempers - rather because of
80 degree temperatures for the DirecTV
500.

DirecTV 500 Jimmie Johnson was trying to
become the 18th driver in Martinsville
history to win a Cup race from the pole
position.
Just two laps into the race - the
fun started with a nine car pileup in
turn one that messed up a number of
drivers including Dale Junior, who had
both front and rear end damage.
A litttle bit later Kenny
Schrader in the Wood Brothers Ford
would run over David Stremme - one of
several rookies who had his hands full.
Scott Riggs and Joe Nemechek
would later tangle in almost the same
spot bringing out the 8th caution flag
of the day.
Tony Stewart stayed out of
trouble and had the dominant car for
most of the day ae he led at the
halfway point of the race.

2004 Herb Sendek is leaving NC State
to take over as next head coach at
Arizona State. Sendek won 191 games
and lost 132 in 10 seasons as the head
coach at State. He also led the
Wolfpack to five straight NCAA
Tournament appearances and reached the
regional semifinals in last season.
But for the most part, you got the
feeling that he was never happy in
Raleigh with the support and respect he
was shown by those in charge and
especially the fans.
Sendek is a 43 year old
Pittsburgh native.

members of the Friends of the Virginian
Railway group who spent this weekend
touring Roanoke's railroad hot spots.

Virginian Railway used to pass through
Roanoke.
The railway brought names like
Buffalo Bill Cody and his Wild West
Show to to the city in the early 20th
century.
In 1959 the railway merged with
Norfolk and Western which later became
Norfolk Southern.
Stops on this weekends tour the
Virginian Railway group included
Shaffers crossing, and the Norfolk
Southern Historical building.
