After two major studies indicating no
brain tumor risk associated with cell
phones.. Swedish researchers say they
ve found evidence long-term use can
raise the risk.

(vo)

Scientists looking at cell phone use
habits among cancer patients and
healthy subjects.. found those who had
spent at least an hour a day on a cell
phone for several years had a 240
percent higher risk of developing a
brain tumor than a person who never
uses a cell phone.

They also found a marked increase in
the risk of tumor on the side of the
head where the telephone was generally
used.

The study s author said the best way to
reduce the risk is to use a hands-free
device.

(wipevo)

Doctors are being urged to restrict
episiotomies.

Experts studying the after effects of
the procedure say obstetricians should
avoid performing an episiotomy to aid
childbirth unless there is a risk of
severe tearing or need to speed up a
difficult delivery.

The American College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists said their data
suggests that women who undergo the
surgery do not have significantly
improved labor, delivery, and recovery
compared with those who do not have an
episiotomy.

(wipevo)

US researchers say they ve been able to
transform immature cells from men's
testicles into powerful stem cells,
which they then coaxed into becoming
nerve, heart and bone cells.

Their work has not been assessed by
standard peer-review processes, but was
presented at a meeting of stem cell
researchers in Valencia, Spain. If
other researchers can duplicate their
efforts, the study offers a possible
new source of valuable stem cells.

After two major studies indicating no
brain tumor risk associated with cell
phones.. Swedish researchers say they
ve found evidence long-term use can
raise the risk.

(vo)

Scientists looking at cell phone use
habits among cancer patients and
healthy subjects.. found those who had
spent at least an hour a day on a cell
phone for several years had a 240
percent higher risk of developing a
brain tumor than a person who never
uses a cell phone.

They also found a marked increase in
the risk of tumor on the side of the
head where the telephone was generally
used.

The study s author said the best way to
reduce the risk is to use a hands-free
device.

(wipevo)

Doctors are being urged to restrict
episiotomies.

Experts studying the after effects of
the procedure say obstetricians should
avoid performing an episiotomy to aid
childbirth unless there is a risk of
severe tearing or need to speed up a
difficult delivery.

The American College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists said their data
suggests that women who undergo the
surgery do not have significantly
improved labor, delivery, and recovery
compared with those who do not have an
episiotomy.

(wipevo)

US researchers say they ve been able to
transform immature cells from men's
testicles into powerful stem cells,
which they then coaxed into becoming
nerve, heart and bone cells.

Their work has not been assessed by
standard peer-review processes, but was
presented at a meeting of stem cell
researchers in Valencia, Spain. If
other researchers can duplicate their
efforts, the study offers a possible
new source of valuable stem cells.

Those are some of the day s top health
stories.

A Haz-mat response truck was
parked near the home yesterday morning
on Starmount Avenue.

Officials say it's protocol for
haz-mat teams to respond to a house
fire this close to a creek.

Investigators have not determined
the cause of Saturday's blaze --
because the home is too unstable to
enter at this point.
