With the nation's eyes focused for
weeks on Duke University, it's
lacrosse team and accusations of
rape....the attention Tuesday shifted
across town to the campus of the
alleged victim.
(inside gym)
Speaking at a forum that included the
mayor and student representatives
from North Carolina Central University
and Duke...the district attorney
stressed..though DNA tests did not link
the players to the woman, the
case remains very much open.
sot: Mike Nifong/District Attorney
"I hope that you will understand by the
fact that I am here this morning
that my presence here means this case
is not going away."(applause)
Sot: Bill Thomas/Defense Attorney
"If these boys are indicted, it will be
one of the worse things I have
seen in my career."
(standup: LEVINSON:DURHAM, NC)
The woman accused 3 players of raping
and choking her at a party
attended by several members of the
team. The issue has angered students
both at Duke and here at North Carolina
Central.
At this historically black university,
the charge by an African American
woman against white players has become
a major topic of conversation in
the classroom.
Though the woman was hired to perform
at the party, some are angry she
has only been identified as an exotic
dancer.
sot: Shawn Cunningham/Senior
"She walk this campus everyday going to
class, trying to provide for her
family. You don't identify her as a
mother, you don't identify her as a
student, you don't identify her as a
woman. (applause)
While the district attorney hints he
has other evidence and doesn't need
positive DNA results, he has
re-submitted the samples to another
lab.
Kerry Sutton/Defense Attorney
"The DNA testing was negative at the
SBI and it won't be any less
negative at lab-tech."
The grand jury meets on Monday....at
that time..the district attorney
can submit players names, but defense
attorneys don't think jurors will
indict... because as they say...the
evidence just isn't there.

It should be up 25 cents a gallon this
summer.
Growing demand, increasing crude oil
prices, and environmental regulations
are all expected to keep gas prices
high during this summer's heavy driving
period. motorists are expected to use
ALMOST NINE-AND-A-HALF million barrels
a day.
Teri Okita/Reporting: At this gas
station here in Hollywood and at others
in California, they re already charging
up to $2.94 for regular gas, $3.11 for
premium.
MOS: They re insane. Truly insane.

MOS: It is bad. Bad for the country.
Bad for the working people.
SOME ANALYSTS SAY ANY SUPPLY
DISRUPTIONS OR EVEN MORE TROPICAL
STORMS OR HURRICANES IN THE COMING
MONTHS COULD LEAD TO FURTHER JUMPS AT
THE PUMP.
Robert Rothschild/Motorist)SOT:
(11:07:35) That, and also this new
threat we have in the Middle East could
drive them up even higher. It seems to
me, yesterday they went up a buck or
two just on the threat of Iran. It s
ridiculous.
FUEL COSTS can vary up to 50-cents a

AVERAGE OF $2.62 A GALLON THIS SUMMER
ISN T EXPECTED TO KEEP TRAVELERS OFF

GRAPHIC=BAM The V-M-I Keydets lost their last
5 games of the season a year on the
football field, and that was not
exactly what they had in mind in
Lexington.
So the school decided to go in a
different direction by bringing in a
new Head Coach.
But this spring a new coach isn't
the only new thing changing at post -as
Grant Kittelson recently found out.

They got to attend the world premiere
of a movie at a drive in theater made
entirely of ice and snow.
It is just 280 miles from the Artic
Circle. Many people ride their
snowmobiles in and sit on reindeer
skins.
The screen itself is made from snow.
Most of the people of the town are
reindeer farmers. In fact, dried
reindeer meat is the most popular
snack.
Organizers say late night thrillers
are especially popular in the subzero
temperatures.
