WITH HIS LIFE ON THE LINE, zacarias
moussaoui has now taken the stand.

his DEFENSE TEAM IS TRYING TO CONVINCE
THE JURY THAT THEIR CLIENT, WHO

SAYS HE WANTS TO DIE, SHOULD BE SPARED
THE DEATH PENALTY.

SKETCHES:WILLIAM HENNESSY JUNIOR

WHY? FIRST , HIS COURT APPOINTED
ATTORNEYS ARGUE, MOUSSOUI HAD

VIRTUALLY NOTHING TO DO WITH
NINE-ELEVEN. HE WAS IN A MINNESOTA

JAIL ON

IMMIGRATION CHARGES THAT DAY. THE
DEFENSE ALSO MAINTAINS MOUSSAOUI

SUFFERS FROM PARANOID

SCHIZOPHERNIA..AND FINALLY THEY POINT
OUT IF THE

JURY GIVES MOUSSOUI DEATH , THEY'RE
HANDING HIM EXACTLY WHAT HE

WANTS...TO BECOME A MARTYR.

(sirgany standup bridge/alexandria
virginia)

Today's defense presentation follows
one of the most emotional days yet

at this sentencing trial. For the
first time ever, jurors and a small

public audience heard the chilling
cockpit voice recording from United

Flight 93.

Just before the plane crashed into a
Pennsylvania field...sounds of a

violent struggle were heard....a
hijacker says....

"they want to get in! Hold! Hold from
the inside."

"in the cockpit" a passenger yells.

A few minutes later the sounds of
breaking glass...and then a passenger

says...

"if we don't we die."

IT'S BELIEVED THE PLANE'S TARGET WAS
THE U-S CAPITOL...THOSE ON

BOARD...ARE CALLED HEROES FOR WHAT THEY
DID.

The defense now faces the daunting task
of countering that riveting

evidence. Would-be shoe-bomber Richard
Reid IS EXPECTED TO TAKE THE

STAND to oppose Moussaoui's claim the
two were to have piloted a fifth

plane into the White House.

OQ=...NEWS 7 SPORTS."(END SOT) << The Radford native stepped into

the best situation of all the new
assistant coaches - at least on paper.

The top five receivers from last
season are all back. The problem is
that those five weren't always as
productive as they could have been -
and Sherman must find a way to help
them realize their potential.

KEVIN SHERMAN

If Sherman's past means anything
- the receivers will have record years.
As a high school receiver himself
Sherman wore number one and was a
Friday Football Extra star in the
mid-80s under one one of his mentors -
Norm Lineburg.

KEVIN SHERMAN

What he didn't learn in Radford -
he no doubt picked up in college at

Ferrum playing under the legendary Hank
Norton. His teammates included Chris
Warren - so Ferrum rarely threw the
ball - and players rarely strayed off
the narrow path mapped out by their
coach.

(Nat Sound: Fans Chanting)

When it comes to making money, Japanese
baseball is striking out, big

time

(Nat Sound: Fans Chanting)

In 2005, all but one of Japans 12 teams
lost money. And this year

promises more of the same

(Courtesy: YES/MLB)

With the cream of its talent, like
Ichiro and Hideki Matsui, skimmed off

and playing across the Pacific,
Japanese baseball has slipped into a

slump not seen since World War Two.

SOT: MOS: Japanese with English

Translation

I PERFECTLY UNDERSTAND MATSUI AND
ICHIRO WANTING TO PLAY IN THE M-L-B,

SAYS THIS FAN. BUT ITS SAD I CANT WATCH
THEM play in JAPAN.

TV ratings are in the cellar along with
revenues. Fact is, many think

Japanese baseball has gotten boring.

Lucy Craft On-Camera Bridge:

BUT THE TALENT DRAIN IS JUST A SYMPTOM
OF WHAT AILS JAPANESE BASEBALL.

BASEBALL FRANCHISES HERE ARE
STEPCHILDREN OF THEIR PARENT
CORPORATIONS -

RUN FOR PUBLICITY, NOT PROFIT.

As fans get lured away by soccer and
U-S major league games on T-V,

Japanese owners have failed to adapt to
the new competition

SOT: Jack Gallagher/Sports Editor/The

Japan Times

THERE IS THIS INHERENT REFUSAL TO
CHANGE, TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. AND

THAT IS WHATS SUFFOCATING THE GAME
RIGHT NOW.

SOT: MOS: Japanese with English

Translation

I THINK TEAMS SHORTCHANGE US, SAYS
THIS FAN. IF THEY TOOK BETTER CARE

OF US, WED SUPPORT THE TEAM MORE.

Some veterans say if you cant beat em,
join em

SOT: Bobby Valentine/Manager/Chiba

Lotte Marines

"THE ASIAN BASEBALL CULTURE ITSELF
NEEDS TO BE A DIVISION OF MAJOR

LEAGUE BASEBALL."

If franchise owners keep striking out
with fans, critics say Japanese

baseball is doomed to become a mere
farm team for the US Major Leagues.
