GRAPHIC=Fatal Accident Police say alcohol and speed were

factors in a fatal car wreck in Roanoke
County this morning.

A Chevy Suburban driven by Bui
Tuyan ran off the right side of
Woodhaven Road at around 12:30. The
vehicle went air born and struck
several trees.

One passenger was pronounced dead
at the scene.

The accident is still under
investigation.

crews tried to figure out how to rescue
her.. is in good condition.

The wreck happened on Route 11 in

Botetourt County, about 5 miles north
of Troutville.

Police say the driver, Josephine
Powell tried to switch lanes but they
believe a truck was in her blind spot,
and when she went to move over, she
clipped the bumper.

The car spun out, rolled down an
embankment and landed against the
trees.

Crews tell us they had to make
sure everything was stable before
moving her.

Rescue workers say the woman was
in good condition. She was transported
to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

GRAPHIC=Murder Invest. Police in Pittsylvania County are

still trying to figure out why a man
shot and killed his girlfriend inside a
convenience store.

It happened yesterday afternoon
in the Cascade community of the county.

The victim's family says they
have no idea what led to the murder.

Hairston Smith is finding it so
difficult that someone would want to
murder her.

But that's what happened here at
Jim's Grocery on Route 58 Friday
afternoon.

in asking for help around one o'clock.

According to authorities, Leon
Clifford Martin then entered the store
and shot her once in the head.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Smith's family, Martin

apparently responsible for a fire in
Franklin County that destroyed a barn,
and threatened to spark a forest fire
nearby.

responding to a house fire when they
were dispatched to the farm on Boones
Mill Road.

They found a barn filled with 200
large bales of hay.

83- year- old Pete Purdue had

The Department of Forestry
had crews on Smith Mountain in
Pittsylvania County and Bull Mountain
in Patrick County.

Officials say despite the

old girl and mauled her mother and
brother --- is still on the loose in

the Cherokee National Forest.

Chilhowie campground in Tennessee.

Officers believe the bear may be
wounded. A rescuer who found the bear
hovering over the young girl says he
shot at it twice. So far, traps have
not been successful in luring the bear.

It's been a stormy week across
the upper midwest

VO NAT as a series of storms developed
producing large hail, damaging wind and
isolated tornadoes. Many of these were
considered mesoscale convective
systems, or clusters of storms which
actually reach their peak at night.

VO NAT To Romania, where heavy rains and
melting snow caused the Danube river to
reached the highest level in the last
hundred years. The Danube is expected
to rise for around another week as the
flood wave travels down from central
Europe. More rain is expected there
this weekend

VO NAT The heavy rain has ended but the
mudslides continue in Columbia. Several
bodies were pulled from the mud this

week. Among the missing were eight
soldiers who were manning a military
checkpoint when the landslides struck.
More than 300 people are now homeless
because of the disaster.

a man has confessed to killing his
girlfriend.

The murder happened yesterday
afternoon at Jim's Grocery in the
Cascade community.

Sheriff's Deputies say Leon Clifford
Martin shot Geraldine Hairston Smith in
the head inside the store.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Martin then called
9-1-1 a short time later from his home
and said he wanted to turn himself in.

The victim's family told News 7 Smith
and Martin had been dating for two
years and they were unaware of any
major problems in the relationship.

Police say Matthews walked into the
First National Bank in Radford Thursday
