An earthquake about 7-point-8 in
magnitude shook San Francisco to its
core. And much of what wasnt destroyed,
was devoured by the fires that
followed.
Now, exactly 100 years later, the city
remembers one of the worst
natural disasters in U.S. history.
(NAT)
My first memory was my father picking
me up out of the crib.
This anniversary has special meaning
for those who lived through it.
Survivors -- now 100-years old or
older. Chrissie Martenstein was
almost nine when the Big One hit.
(SOT: CHRISSIE MARTENSTEIN/EARTHQUAKE
SURVIVOR)
Everything was dark you know. And you
had to protect your windows.//My
mother had to do the cooking on the
streets. They had all these
makeshift shacks on the street.
Its believed more than 3000 people were
killed, 28-thousand buildings
destroyed, and some 300-thousand
residents left homeless.
(STANDUP BRIDGE)
SAN FRANCISCO STARTED TO REBUILD ALMOST
IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE QUAKE. BY
1915, THE RECONSTRUCTION WAS LARGELY
COMPLETED. BUT THE CITYS LOCATION
ALONG THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT STILL POSES
A MAJOR THREAT.
Scientists generated a computer model
of what would happen if a similar
earthquake struck San Francisco today.
Even though the Golden Gate Bridge and
many modern buildings would
absorb the shock, a report predicts the
quake would kill more than
3-thousand people and cause at least
150-billion dollars in damage.
(SOT: CHRIS POLAND/ENGINEER)
In terms of the size of the earthquake
and the impact, it could be a
Katrina-style disaster.
Researchers have not perfected a method
for predicting when the next
earthquake will hit, but the lessons of
1906 have taught San Franciscans
its important to be prepared.

"Poor military judgment had been used
throughout this mission."
IN THE WAKE OF CALLS FROM SIX RETIRED
GENERALS FOR HIS RESIGNATION, DONALD
RUMSFELD IS MOUNTING HIS DEFENSE.
"These are all magnificent people
making their opinions known and I think
that
is okay. Frankly, I would not go so
far to say that the defense secretary
should retire. Doesn't provide an
alternative."
FRIENDLIER WORDS FROM OTHER RETIRED
MILITARY LEADERS ....
AS RUMSFELD HOSTS A QUICKLY-ARRANGED
MEETING TODAY WITH RETIRED GENERALS AND
MILITARY ANALYSTS.
FRIDAY, THE PENTAGON PRESS OFFICE ARMED
SOME OF THEM WITH TALKING POINTS LIKE
THIS:
"...SENIOR MILITARY LEADERS HAVE BEEN
INVOLVED TO AN UNPRECEDENTED DEGREE IN
EVERY DECISION MAKING PROCESS..."
EXACT WORDS FROM THE MEMO AND FIGURES
FOR RUMSFELD'S NUMEROUS MEETINGS WITH
MILITARY CHIEFS AND COMMANDERS SHOWED
UP VERBATIM MONDAY IN A WALL STREET
JOURNAL OP-ED PIECE COUNTERING
RUMSFELD'S CRITICS.
General Myers has spoken about his deep
trust for Secretary Rumsfeld.
Boom! Holy (bleeped)!)
IN IRAQ, THE REAL FIGHTING IS A WORLD
AWAY FROM THE BATTLE FOR PUBLIC
OPINION.
FOR NOW, TROOPS ARE FOCUSED ON MAKING
IT FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT.
"We sacrifice what we do for people
back home and hopefully they appreciate
that."
STANDUP -- AND BACK HERE AT HOME POLLS
SHOW A MAJORITY OF AMERICANS STILL
THINK
THE WAR IN IRAQ IS WINNABLE.
ANALYSTS SAY REMOVING RUMSFELD WOULD
UNDERMINE THAT ARGUMENT.
IN WASHINGTON, I'M BRIANNA KEILAR.
