firefighters begin a major back-burn.

The fire's been burning in
Patrick County since a lightning strike
started it Friday.
It's burned nearly 37-hundred
acres, destroyed three homes and caused

County today, battling flames that
heavily damaged a home in Forest.

More than three dozen firefighters
responded to a house on Thomas
Jefferson Road after a passing
bicyclist spotted flames pouring out
the front.
It took firefighters about 20
minutes to get the fire under control.
No word yet on the cause.
The family of three was not home

stabbing in Northwest Roanoke claims he
acted in self-defense.
At the same time, the victim's
girlfriend reportedly says he was only
trying to defend himself against Edward
Beverly's attack.
The Roanoke Times reported- -in its

Yancy Tyler. The homicide occurred

Walker's home on 35th Street.
She told the paper she'd been seeing

Tyler is in dispute.

planning- the University tested its new
emergency system.
After an initial mis-start, the
early-warning System sounded from
four-different sirens on campus.
For three-minutes, a tone-
-similar to a police or rescue squad
siren- -sounded throughout campus.
Most students and faculty seemed
unfazed by the all the noise.
Administrators say it will be
used to alert the community in the
event of a terrorist attack, severe
weather or other emergency situations.

Delegate Ben Cline's bill that requires
the state to study what's needed to
divert trucks traveling Interstate 81
to rail.
After zipping through the veto
session, senators turned their
attention to the budget impasse.
Several members urged the body to
stand strong for the Senate plan to
raise a billion dollars a year for
transportation.
