noticeable for residents in Patrick
County today.

Firefighters will set more than one
thousand acres of Bull Mountain on
fire.
The plan is to set controlled backfires
to help contain the fire that's burned
more than two thousand acres.
The fire has now burned more than
25-hundred acres in all. Officials
expect the number approach
four-thousand before their work is
done.

GRAPHIC= Robbery Police are investigating an armed
robbery in Danville last night.
It happened at around nine at the
Edgewood Mart on the 1500 block of
Edgewood Drive.
Police say the suspect demanded
money from the clerk before fleeing on
foot.
They say the suspect was wearing
all black and is a five foot five black
male in his twenties.
There were no injuries.

a murder suspect.

They are on the lookout for 28-year-old
Edward DeShawn Beverly.

Police were called to this house on
35th street, Northwest -just after
midnight Tuesday after people heard a
woman screaming for help.
They found 45-year-old Yancy Tyler
inside. He was pronounced dead at the
scene.

One man is dead and his wife
injured after a domestic dispute in
Campbell County Monday night.
Deputies were called to this townhome
on English Tavern Road after neighbors
reported a loud fight.
35-year-old Donald Moon died from a
stab wound.
28-year-old Angela Moon also was
stabbed during the fight ... she's been
treated and released.
No charges have been filed while
authorities continue their
investigation.

forced one business to evacuate for
almost two hours yesterday.

Somebody called the Consolidated
Shoe Company on Timberlake Road shortly
after noon and said there was a bomb in
the building.
Employees were evacuated and a
police dog searched the area without
finding anything.
Workers were allowed back in
around 2.
No one's been arrested.

An accident in Pulaski County
backed up traffic for miles yesterday
afternoon.
It all started when a tanker
truck's rear tire blew out.
Police say the driver lost
control, overturned... and hit a car.
The tanker was hauling a
food-grade alcohol, and a private
cleanup company was called in to
transfer the hazardous cargo onto
another truck.
The two drivers were taken to the
hospital.

the state budget, following a veto
override session today.

:00 Budget negotiators met for the
first time in almost a month yesterday,
and transportation was a hot issue.
House Republicans said that
warnings about the possible suspension
of several transportation projects are
politically motivated.
V-DOT released last week a
partial list of projects that it says
will be delayed, if the General
Assembly failed to provide additional
funding.
The House is awaiting Senate
action on a plan to set aside a billion
dollars for transportation to be dealt
with during a second special session.

County--
A landowner is fighting the
government's efforts to seize his
property to clean up a nearby landfill.

The city of Bedford wants to use
eminent domain to take over 44 acres of
land owned by Michael Schrock on Draper
Road.
The city says efforts to buy the
land at a fair price have failed, and
they need access to continue cleaning
up leaking contaminants.
Schrock says they won't offer him
a fair price, and that his lawyer has
already worked out a new agreement that
would give the city continued access.

officials are toasting a new idea to
promote its local wineries.

A new federal mandate will go into
affect in July...that mandate will stop
small wineries' ability to sell their
wines to retailers, more specifically
mom and pop stores.
It's a move wineries say will
considerably hurt their business.
To try to make up for it, the
County's Tourism Office unvelied the
Bedford Wine Trail. It's a new
promotional effort that offers a free
gift to those who visit each of the
wineries

warning siren system.
They're on four poles -- like
this one, scattered around campus.
The system will be used to alert
the community to emergencies like
tornados, chemical spills and terrorist
activities.
The first test of the system will
be today at 12:10 in the afternoon.
The alarms will sound for about
three minutes.
Folks living in town, near the
school, will likely hear the warning
too.

hitting the streets today to promote
campus diversity.

wake of the recent firing of Chris
Clement, a black professor in the
department of Political Science.

These students say his dismissal is a
perfect example of how Virginia Tech
consistently fails to retain minority
students and faculty.
In fact, statistics show only 4 point
eight percent of the faculty is black.
Minority students also say they don't
feel welcomed on campus.
Today's protest will begin around
1:15 at Tech's political science
building and end at Burruss Hall.
There, students will give a list of
demands to the university president.

out about falling victim to a recent
scam.

Michael and Monica Brennan say
they were fed lies for six months and
scammed out of two-thousand dollars.
Ceasario Acosta Junior and his
wife told the Brennans, Lissette
Lezette Acosta was dying of cancer.
But police say the Acostas are
really career con artists.
It turned out Cesario was a
convicted felon and wanted in two
states.
Now, Lissette also faces charges.
The Brennans say they became
suspicious when the Acostas kept asking
for their personal information.
