to deciding where to play high school
football next year.

the chances of playing in Victory
Stadium are slim to none.

Kathy Stockburger says the city

is negotiating to play PH's and
Fleming's games in either Roanoke
County, Franklin County, or a
combination of both.

The city will most likely have
to pay rent and share revenues but
Stockburger says it will still be
cheaper than playing at Victory
Stadium.

The school board hopes to
finalize a deal by early next month.

that the Bull Mountain forest fire will
be fully contained today.

burning near their fire lines to make
sure the flames don't start up on their
own again.

Firefighters from Augusta and
Wise Counties led the way down Bull

Mountain.

Crews were dealing with difficult
conditions and steep terrain. But they
have the fire more than 80 percent
contained.

While foresty officials expect
full containment today, crews will be
mopping up the area for a few days.

Firefighters say the flames won't
be completely out until we get a good
rain.

topic in Richmond yesterday.

Both houses spent the afternoon
taking up bills either amended or
vetoed by Governor Tim Kaine.

Delegates and senators rejected
dozens of amendments, but couldn't come
up with enough votes to override any of
the governor's vetoes.


Governor Kaine now has 30- days
to act on any amendments the
legislature rejects.

After the Veto Session lawmakers
reconvened for the Special Session
designed to continue work towards
ending the budget impasse.

controversial ban continues at Smith
Mountain Lake.

Dozens of businesses recently won
a fight to lift a ban on dock-building
during spawning season -- saying
there's no scientific evidence it harms
fish.

But, the ban remains in effect on
other in-water construction like
rip-rap -- or laying rocks along the
shoreline.

Bill Greene, who makes his living
doing rip-rap, says it's no more
harmful to fish than building docks.

the lake, says it's willing to make the
same request to federal regulators to
remove the ban on rip-rap, but only if
there's legitimate evidence supporting
such a removal.

Clement says he was fired- but

Yesterday, after nearly a year of
planning- the University tested its new
emergency system.

After an initial mis-start, the
early-warning System sounded from
four-different sirens on campus.

For three-minutes, a tone-
-similar to a police or rescue squad
siren- -sounded throughout campus.

Most students and faculty seemed
unfazed by the all the noise.

Administrators say it will be
used to alert the community in the
event of a terrorist attack, severe
weather or other emergency situations.

Bedford County.

Authorities say a passing
bicyclist spotted flames coming from
the front of this home at 33-91 Thomas
Jefferson Road around 1:30 yesterday
afternoon.

More than three dozen
firefighters responded to the 9-1-1
call and spent about twenty minutes
getting the blaze under control.
