to a new law that will take affect in
2008.

The new law will make having a
passport mandatory when travelling to
Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean.
Whereas before, you only needed a
drivers' license and birth certificate.

Here in Roanoke, the Post Master
tells us to handle the influx of
people, in addition to the location
downtown, the Post Office opened this
passport center at Rutherford Avenue.

construction workers to safety
yesterday.

The two workers were at the
bottom of a 60 foot deep waterway
pouring concrete when officials say an
apparent equipment malfunction injured
both men.

The workers were unable to climb
out of the pit on their own, and had to
be hoisted out by the rescue workers.

After about an hour both men were
out, and on their way to Roanoke
Memorial Hospital.

Neither worker was critically
injured.

It's been an active week, with
severe storms, even a volcano eruption.

VO NAT First, people in southeast Texas
woke up to savage thunderstorms
yesterday, bringing with it hail and

damaging winds. In Rosenberg, near
Houston, winds shredded the roof of
this elementary school. No one was
hurt, but classes were canceled.

The storms were part of the same
weather system that beat down on Austin
Thursday night.

VO NAT To Indonesia, where Mount Merapi
erupted yesterday, forcing more than
100 villagers to evacutate the area.
Merapi last erupted in 1994, sending
out a cloud of toxic gas that burned 60
people to death.

Indonesia sits astride the "Ring
of Fire," a series of volcanoes and
fault lines stretching from the Western
Hemisphere through Japan and Asia to
New Zealand.

In 2008, a new law will require
every American Citizen to have a

passport to travel to Mexico, Canada or
the Caribbean.

Already post offices across the
OQ= country are seeing dramatic increases

in the number of people applying for
passports.

percent increase this year over last
year...we've already processed over

Last year, in addition to the dowtown
location, the Post Office opened this
station on Rutherford Avenue to help
deal with the influx of people.

Like everything, a passport has a
price. Here it's 112 dollars. 12
dollars higher than last year, since
federal government increased the
processing fee.

But a customer we spoke with doesn't
mind the price because it gives her a
sense of security and peace of mind.

up again when 2008 draws near.

If you're thinking you want to get
a passport or need one, here's a list
of things you need to bring with you,
an original document showing you're a
citizen... a birth certificate,
naturalization papers or an expired
passport. You will also need a photo
ID.

The two most common mistakes you
don't want to make?....sigining your
application before coming in and
bringing copies of citizenship
documents - they must be originals.

rare sight.
