GRAPHIC=Hutcherson It's been months in the making,

but a jury has been picked in the
federal fraud case against Lynchburg
Mayor Carl Hutcherson and the trial is
underway.

Jurors heard the tape of a
telephone conversation between Reverend
Hutcherson and Reverend Jerry Falwell's
SON.

Falwell's Ministry gave
32-thousand dollars to a new charity
set up by Hutcherson's church in 2004.

Hutcherson was a "good man"- -his
lawyer told the jury. He just wasn't
taking care of his own personal
financial situation.

The Falwells made the charitable
donation, expecting Hutcherson would
take the money with the understanding
he'd pay it back.

The government says Hutcherson
misappropriated the funds for his own
use, and paid it back only after he got
caught.

GRAPHIC=VA Budget State Senators were at work

late into the evening, preparing what
may be the last chance at a compromise
budget.

Senators mulled a half-dozen
transportation measures today,
preparing one last package of statewide
and regional roads, rails and transit
measures.

There's a May 15th target date
for enacting a budget without the risk
of interrupting operations of state
agencies and local governments.

Senator Charles Hawkins told the
Senate Finance Committee that it was
"time to consider transportation as an

entity apart from the budget."

The House has proposed passing a
regular budget, then returning in the
Fall to deal with transportation
issues.

television station the driver turned a

Thousands of people have been
diagnosed with thyroid cancer and the
eventual death toll is estimated at

brought an end to yesterday's search
for a shooting suspect in Wythe County.

arraigned this morning.

wounding her boyfriend, Laquan Pittman.

A neighbor caught the aftermath
on home video.

Chief Deputy Keith Dunagan says
Stroupe fled to North Carolina after
the double shooting yesterday morning.

He eventually talked to Stroupe
on his cell phone and convinced him
that turning himself in

would be the best thing to do.

The investigator says Stroupe
seemed to be wandering around.

SNY-MLB Barry Bonds hit his 711th homer
this last night and he did it off one
of our own - Billy Wagner. Bonds sent
this 99 mile an hour fastball into the
seats in left-center for his third
homer of the year and second in as many
games. Wagner is now the 418th pitcher
to surrender a homer to Bonds. It's his
first pinch-hit homer since Aug. 23rd
of 2001.

2006 Final Four In one other hardwood note Jim
Larranaga, who led the surprising
George Mason Patriots to the Final Four
earlier this month, got a contract
extension today that will keep him in
Fairfax through the 2011-12 season.

Larranaga is 166-and-105 in nine
seasons with Mason. He has had chances
to take bigger jobs in the past couple
of weeks, but repeatedly says he likes
coaching in the CAA and living in the
suburbs of Washington.

allow any of its current wrestlers to
transfer.

The athletic department released
a statement this afternoon concerning

the transition of the program

Last Season saying in effect that no
scholarship wrestlers will be released
from their binding letters of intent
for the next school year.

When wrestling coach Tom Brands
resigned earlier this month, it was
feared that as many as four of the top
wrestlers on the team would leave and
follow him to Iowa.

But since then Kevin Dresser has
been hired to replace him, and Tech
says the earliest it would grant a
released would be the following season.

The Maroons finished up their

fifth season as a varsity program with
just 15 wins and 21 losses.

In the ODAC - they won 6 games
and lost 12.

The FBI says the alleged robber
tried doing it before business hours,
telling an employee to open the vault.

Quick on her feet, she told the man
she needed to de-activate the alarm or
police would come... only she really
activated it.

When the man told her to go
outside and look for the employee
needed to open the vault, she locked
him inside.

After a five hour standoff, things
ended peacefully. And the man, wearing
