wreck just south of Webb Road.
Authorities say a log truck ran
off the road around 5- 30 this morning
and overturned, spilling its load.

Thomas has died. A family member called
us to say that Thomas passed away just
after midnight from heart problems.

to the House of Delegates in 1974.
After serving nearly 30 years in
the General Assembly he announced his
retirement in 2003.

He and six other people had
climbed atop E-J Thomas's Market to
escape the flood water.

left one person dead.

The shooting happened around 6:45
yesterday morning at a home on Ivanhoe
Road.

Home Video Deputies say 22-year-old
Tiffany Louise Brewer and 31-year old
Laquan Pittman were shot.
A neighbor caught the
aftermath on home video.
The Sheriff says Brewer died
after surgery late yesterday afternoon
at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Her former boyfriend,
30-year-old Ronald Stroupe, is now
charged with her murder.
Stroupe's being held in the
New River Valley Jail.

So we went out there yesterday to

We found the fields are playable

some Christiansburg residents worried
it will ruin their neighborhood.

This section of land along Dow
Street has been proposed as one of five
entrances into the new development on
the old Harkrader farms.
That move would easily increase
traffic, and folks here are worried
about the neighborhood children.
Although town council will not
keep the developer from building,
members have discussed the potential
problem of increased traffic along the
Street.
A vote for final approval is
expected in May.

waited for Roanoke County Supervisors'
decision on a proposed housing
development.

In a four to one vote, the
supervisors approved Loblolly Mill, a
subdivision that will include about 29
houses most likely priced between
500-thousand and one million dollars.
The planning commission voted
against the project but supervisors did
not agree... addressing concerns taxes
could go up but arguing that also means
property values go up.
But the main reason most
supervisors voted yes was they believe
the developer took precautions to
ensure open space, preserving the
community.

unanimously denied a request which
would have brought a boarding and day
camp to the former Wilderness
Leadership Academy in Buchanan.
Residents were worried the camp
would disrupt the quietness of the
region and put a strain on county
emergency services.
The board also denied the request
for a 39-home subdivision off Etzler
Road.

says he almost has enough delegates to
secure the Democratic nomination in
this year's Fifth District
congressional race.

Weed's campaign says they picked
up 72 more delegates during party
caucuses Monday night, bringing them
within four of the 101 needed to win
the nomination.
If he gets it, it will be Weed's
second shot at Republican incumbent
Virgil Goode.

candidate ... Bern Ewert ... says he's
in the race until the end.
Ewert says he's the only one
who's popular enough in Southside to
have a chance at beating Goode.

GRAPHIC=Police Shooting Authorities say 30-year-old Jesse
Lee Allen was shot and wounded, after
he came towards an officer with a knife
in his hand.

The incident happened shortly
after three yesterday morning... when
police say Allen robbed the Sheetz at
Williamson Road and Orange Avenue.
A police officer who was making a
routine stop at the store chased the
suspect up Courtland Avenue.
A second officer confronted the
man near the intersection of Courtland
and Wayne Street.

the man to drop the knife, and fired
his gun when the suspect ignored his
commands and moved closer to him.

GRAPHIC=Carl Hutcherson Jury selection for the trail of
Lynchburg Mayor Carl Hutcherson is set
to begin this morning at 9:30.
Documents brought to light by
Carl Hutcherson's defense team earlier
this week failed to make much of an
impression on the judge.
Yesterday, Federal Judge
James Turk denied a motion to dismiss
one fraud count against the Lynchburg
Mayor.

VO-NAT Agent Rob Childress acknowledged
yesterday that he asked the Social
Security office in Lynchburg to call
Hutcherson in last year.
Childress told local auditors to
"keep it low key and 'routine,' " so
Hutcherson wouldn't realize he was
being investigated.
Hutcherson's lawyers called it a
government "sting" operation.
The judge said he doubts such
evidence is admissible.
Though a Social Security auditor
concluded "fraud was not an issue," the
judge says that's up to the jury to
decide.
