the highest favorable rating among
registered Roanoke voters.
Former Mayor David Bowers draws the
highest favorable numbers, at 42 per
cent, with Granger Macfarlane coming in

But candidates who favor building two
new high school stadiums also draw high
favorable numbers.
Current Councilman Alfred Dowe is just
behind Macfarlane at 32 per cent.
And next in line are running mate David
Trinkle, and a third "For the City"

after allegedly leading police on a
high-speed chase through town today.

It started around 10:45 when a
patrol car tried to stop a vehicle on
Memorial Avenue for having tinted
windows.
The driver refused to pull over and
led authorities on a chase through
mid-town at speeds of up to 60 miles
per hour.
Police finally were able to box
him in on Taylor Street.
36-year-old William Cox of
Kissimmee kiss-IM-me, Florida, is
charged with reckless driving, no
operator's license and attempting to
elude police.

The Chevy Cavalier was stopped at

tonight at nine o'clock by lethal
injection in Jarratt.
Less than an hour ago, the
Supreme Court denied a request to delay
his execution.
That follows a federal court's
rejection of Vinson's argument that
lethal injection is a cruel and unusual
punishment and a violation of his
rights.
Governor Tim Kaine caught a lot
of heat about his objection to the
death penalty during the governor's
race.
His opponent, Jerry Kilgore,
aired attack ads- featuring crime
victims who questioned Kaine's views on
the death penalty.
Governor Kaine, however, says he
takes his oath to uphold Virginia's
laws seriously and will only use his
power of clemency the way other
governors have used it the past.
