If a Senate panel gets its way....the
Federal Emergency Management
Agency will pay the ultimate price for
its slow response to Hurricane
Katrina.
sot: Sen.Susan Collins/R-Maine
"Our first and most important
recommendation is to abolish FEMA.
FEMA
is a discredited, demoralized and
disfunctional."
That severe proposal is one of 86
formulated by a bi-partisan panel
during an eight month probe . FEMA
would be replaced by the National
Preparedness and Response Authority
which would coordinate government
disaster response and communicate
directly with the President during a
major crisis.
It's lack of communication from former
FEMA director michael brown that
senators also blame.
sot: Collins again
"he was disengaged from the beginning.
he failed to communicate vital
information of the levees."
Brown...who lost his job after
Katrina...is not impressed with the
plan.
(graphic)
He says..."they're just re-creating the
wheel and making it look like
they're calling for change."
Change is exactly what President Bush
promised after Katrina devastated
New Orleans and coastal
Mississippi....and it took days for
help to
arrive. The President will be back in
the region today to thank
volunteers who have worked to rebuild
the region.
(Coffey Standup close)
And with the start of Hurricane season
about a month away...the senate
panel says the U-S overall remains
ill-prepared to respond to a another
catastrophic event like Katrina.

bwatts@wdbj7.com We were drier than normal, and
did have some warmer spells. But could
climate have played a part in the bug
increase, or is it simply perception?
Eric Day, an entomologist at
Virginia Tech, says it might not be how
cold it gets, but rather when the cold
arive arrives.

Last Season saying in effect that no
scholarship wrestlers will be released
from their binding letters of intent
for the next school year.
When wrestling coach Tom Brands
resigned earlier this month, it was
feared that as many as four of the top
wrestlers on the team would leave and
follow him to Iowa.
But since then Kevin Dresser has
been hired to replace him, and Tech
says the earliest it would grant a
released would be the following season.
