leader, and a man of the people.
Yesterday, the unassuming storekeeper
and veteran lawmaker was remembered for
his character and compassion.

Thomas died early Wednesday at
the age of 76... and Friday afternoon
family and friends filled St. Andrew's
Catholic Church for the funeral
service.

The mourners included Governor
Tim Kaine, former Governors Linwood
Holton and Gerald Baliles, and many
others Thomas had befriended.

connection with a string of daytime
home burglaries

Carroll County.

The Carroll County sheriff says
48-year-old Michael William York of
Roanoke often broke into homes while

the owners were at work or church.

Some of the charges carry a
mandatory two year sentence for each
count.

recovered from a Roanoke pawn shop.

animals.

Also a problem is the county's

Parts of Texas are in an extreme
drought. But you can't tell it

from the sky here lately. For the past
several days, storm systems have
crossed the Lone Star state providing
much needed rainfall, along with wind,
large hail and even several tornadoes.

Thunderstorms remain in the
forecast for them through much of next
week. We'll see a modified version of
this system by next week.

spring is taking a hold of the region.
With snowfall well above average this
winter, many areas are under a flood
watch through June due to the melting

This week a federal jury has been
hearing how the Lynchburg Mayor
allegedly mis-handled Social Security
payments intended for four different
mentally-challenged individuals.

The jury also reviewed bank
statements that revealed Hutcherson
paid more than 22-thousand dollars in
over-draft and insufficient fund fees
on his own accounts.

The evidence indicates the

Mayor's money management approach
carried over to the Social Security
recipients he was supposed to be
keeping track of.

Fred Jones was charged a total of
226- dollars under Hutcherson's care.
Kathy Price had to pay 81 dollars when
her account was overdrawn. They only
get about 600-dollars a month from the
government.

Virginia's top-cop to take a closer
look at the oil companies.

Virginia, along with every other
state, received a letter from the
federal government this week asking
them to consider any remedies they have
to combat rising gas prices.

The Commonwealth's price- gouging
laws only apply when a state of
emergency is declared by the governor,
but there are anti- trust laws the
state could use if it looks like oil
companies are doing anything illegal.

Attorney General Bob McDonnell
believes the state needs to start
looking into alternative fuels.

that's according to a recent
News7/Survey USA poll.

back, and 37 per cent say they WILL, if
prices hit three bucks.

12 per cent say it'll take FOUR dollars
to make a difference in their driving.
Just two- percent put the price at
five.

Almost 60-percent of those polled say
higher prices will have an impact on
their summer travel plans.
