GRAPHIC=Accident A Blacksburg police officer was

injured last night while responding to
an emergency call.

Police say Officer Fred Carlson
was hit on his motorcycle at the
intersection of Wharton and East
Roanoke Streets just after seven
o'clock.

The officer did have his lights
and sirens activated.

Police say 22-year-old Scott
Cramer was driving an S-U-V and failed
to yield to the officer.

Officer Carlson was treated and
released from Montgomery Regional
Hospital.

Cramer was charged with failure
to yield the right of way.

birthday Monday, but some say it's time
to pull the brakes.

A group of analysts who have
followed Amtrak over the years is
gathering in Washington to discuss its
financial future.

Amtrak received no federal aid
last year, and its highly touted
high-speed train was sidelined for
months with brake problems.

Critics say Amtrak should
privatize some of its operations --
similar to changes in other countries.

But, Amtrak says the future is
bright -- with plans to cut costs and
revamp some long-distance routes.

believe they may have stumbled upon a
human trafficking ring from Mexico.

Several arrests were made when a
sheriff's deputy came across a vehicle
crammed with illegal workers.

The long journey from Mexico
ended at a Loudon County gas station,
along Charles Town Pike.

Authorities say the group may
have been taking back roads so it
wouldn't be detected.

Police believe it was a long
brutal trip for the group.

Starting out in Mexico, they
somehow crossed the border, then
crammed inside a truck.

They drove 22 to 23 hours before
being stopped in Watertown.

Each of them paid a hefty fare to
escape Mexico.

yesterday on the campus of Hollins
University.

The Great Strides fund-raiser is
an annual event aimed at raising money
for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic
disease that affects about 30-thousand
people in the United States.

Many of the people walking
yesterday have been directly affected
by the disease.

taking a spill while on vacation.

was in Fiji when he fell out of a
coconut tree and suffered a mild
concussion.

He still had the energy to jump
on a jet ski where he had another
accident.

The 62-year-old was eventually
helicoptered to a New Zealand hospital
where his wife was seen arriving at the

hospital.

No word on Richards condition.

increased risk as well. Parents should
also avoid sharing their bed. And they
should be aware that low birth weight

and preterm babies are more likely to
die from SIDS.

making sure your child is up-to-date on
his or her shots could protect them
down the line.

Strong storms roared through
Texas yesterday.

VO NAT Check out this video from
Gainesville, where these parked planes
were tossed around like play toys as at
the local airport where winds estimated
at 100mph pounded the area. Baseball

size hail has also reported in the
vicinity of the storm.

VO NAT Several tornadoes also touched
down in parts of the Lone Star state
yesterday. This home just North of
Gainesville was destroyed after a
twister moved through. A barn collapsed
north of Houston from high winds
killing two horses inside.

VO NAT A round of heavy rain fell just
before noon yesterday through much of
Arkansas. In Little Rock, water flooded
roads, homes and even cars, as a nearly
stationary line of rain extened from
the Gulf coast all the way to the Great
Lakes. Rain is again in the forecast
for today.
