On day 3 of the Sago hearings, Federal

"we are still analyzing data, looking
at evidence, performing tests."

So far, government investigators agree
with mining officials that

methane was the primary fuel of the
january explosion that trapped 13

miners, but they stop short of the mine
company conclusion that

lightning caused the blast.

sot: Gates again

"we are looking at lightning and roof
falls."

(LEVINSON bridge)

SINCE MARCH...MINING OFFICIALS HAVE
POINTED TO LIGHTNING AS THE PROBABLE

CAUSE AND wednesday THEY OFFERED
STATISTICAL EVIDENCE OF THAT.

The comapny also presented expert
testimony to back their claim... that

the strike hit a mile from the mine
opening and likely sent an

electrical pulse along a power line
that ultimately ignited methane gas

in the mine.

SOT: Thomas Novak/Virginia Tech Mining

Professor (14:00:57)

"Very strong evidence that just can't
be ignored as a mere coincidence."

But some family members are still not
convinced....and they say the mine

company is trying to influence public
opinion before State and federal

officials complete their investigation.
There's been no official

word on when that report will be
released.
