people affected by a Florida brush
fire.. and good news for some of the
one thousand people evacuated because
of the fire.

Fire fighters have battled a
12-hundred acre blaze since the
weekend. Power crews have also been
able to restore the electricity in the
affected area.
The flames have been fed by debris

worried the wind could cause flare ups.

and Todd Russell were lifted from their
underground prison after painstaking
rescue work with hand-held tools.
The miners were lodged in a steel
case beneath tons of fallen rocks some
three-thousand feet underground.
Hard-rock miners got through more
than 45 feet of rock with a giant
drilling machine. But cutting the final
sections of the escape tunnel had to be
done with diamond-tipped hand tools to
avoid a cave-in.

star from Salem has decided to quit
coaching.

Last Season Shaine Miles, who has been an
:00 assistant coach at Marshall University
for the past three years has resigned
his post in order to own and operate a
Chick-Fil-A franchise.
Miles was considered by most to
be a rising star in the coaching
business and a natural recruitor, but
he says once his son was born the time
away from home got to be too much of a
burden.
Miles and his wife Vanessa, who
also is a Salem native will still be
close to Huntington - the fast food
restaurant will be in Ashland, Kentucky
- a few miles from Huntington.
Miles was an all-star linebacker
at Salem his senior season at 1992 and
later lettered four straight years at
Virginia Tech - playing on four
consecutive bowl teams.

in the rain yesterday and will now have
the opportunity to host a first round
NCAA tournament game this coming

Coach Bill Pilat's team is

have disposed of some of the best teams
in the country.

season as he helped lead the Detroit

Wallace has now won the award a
