without controversy.

of all, why the need for the changes?

Natasha, there are two main reasons.

*CG standup Justin McLeod
jmcleod@wdbj7.com One the magnet programs were costing

File Tape So tonight the school board agreed to
completely restructure the magnet
school program.

Two of them, the ones at Forest Park
and Lincoln Terrace will be eliminated
next year. The aviation program will
then be phased out in two years.

Seven other schools will no longer be
called magnet schools. They are now
specialty schools. Essentially that
redesigns them to give those schools
more autonomy.

The changes will affect roughly 600
students and many of them will now have
to find a way to get there.

The school system is no longer
providing transportation for kids who
go to a school outside their attendance
area.

LIVE=Justin Full/BAM LIVE FULL

For that reason, two of the school
board members voted against the changes
tonight.

DOUBLE BOXES=Natasha & Justin/BAM DOUBLE BOXES

But in the end Natasha, the vote was
five to two so the measure passed.

QUESTION: So Justin why can't the
school system provide transportation
any longer?

Natasha, it's a money issue.
Currently the magnet programs cost more

than a 1/2 million dollars. The
changes will save the school system
roughly 300-thousand dollars.

OQ=News 7 Sports. << For the first 4 races of the
(END SOT) season, Darien Grubb was thrust in the

spotlight as he took over as the crew
chief of the 48 car and won 2 races
when Chad Knaus was suspended.

(GRUBB QUICK BITE)

Grubb spent his time in the
spotlight, but he's happy to be back to
his job as the lead engineer for
Hendrick Motorsports

(GRUBB BITE ON BEING CREW CHIEF)

The success that the 48 team has
had with and without Knaus has been
rather equal as Jimmie Johnson
currently leads the Cup Point
Standings, speaks to how well the team
works together.

(GRUBB BITE on TEAMWORK:)

Part of that team has the common
bond of being Hokies, Grubb, Caleb Hurd
and Brian Whitesall all work for
Hendrick and all graduated from Tech.

(GRUBB BITE:)

(STANDUP: Grubb and the rest of the 48
team will look to continue atop the
point standings this weekend in
Darlington, then they head home for 2
weeks of racing at Lowe's Motor
Speedway a place that Jimmie Johnson
has won the last 4 Point Races. Grant

Blue Comets vs. Patriots There were scouts from 13 major :00 league clubs on hand Tuesday afternoon,
to check out the Blue Comets hard
throwing right hander Jeremy Jeffress.

Jeffress did not disappoint,

throwing consistently in the mid 90's,
giving up one hit and striking out 7
Patriots in 4 in two thirds innings of
work despite battling a bad case of
broncitis.

The game was scoreless until the
4th. That's when David Lacks goes back
up the middle with the base *CG final Halifax County knock, scoring Justin Bagbey and Tony 7 Barbour for Halifax. The Comets had a Patrick Henry big inning and went on to win it 7 to 2 2 clinching the Western Valley District
