(nats...smoke/fire) LOCATOR:
BAGHDAD, IRAQ

The inferno of violence kept burning
today, following a bloody weekend

for American forces in Iraq.

The US military says seven service
members died in combat, (MAP)

including two soldiers who were killed
when their helicopter was shot

down in heavy fighting south of

Baghdad. (MAP OUT)

Two Marines died in clashes in the
Anbar province west of the

capital...the heart of the Sunni
insurgency.

In Baghdad itself, roadside bomb
attacks left three more US soldiers

dead.

The bloodshed came as American soldiers
and helicopters launched raids

in the area known as the "Triangle of
Death" because of the frequency of

insurgent attacks.

Military officials say dozens of
insurgents were killed in the gun

battles...and in a separate military
operation SIXTEEN al Qaeda suspects

were killed.

(nats...saddam trial)

Amid the backdrop of violence, the
trial of Saddam Hussein has

resumed...again.

And AGAIN...Saddam was

defiant...refusing to enter a plea when
the judge

for the first time formally read out
the charges against him.

SOT: SADDAM WITH TRANSLATION:

THIS DOES NOT AFFECT ONE HAIR ON MY
HEAD. I CANNOT MERELY ANSWER YES OR

NO TO THIS. I AM THE PRESIDENT OF IR@Q.
