Harrisonburg shopping center this
morning and started shooting.

Officers say 65 year old Brewer
Hoover Junior fatally shot two workers
at the American Home Patient office
near the Valley Mall
Gary Gibson and Bonnie Gump died at
the scene. THey were both 54 years
old.
Hoover held off a police SWAT team
for about an hour and a half, before he
turned the gun on himself. He later
died at the hospital.
Hoover apparently worked with the two
victims, but police are not releasing
any other details.

Police have identified the victim as
31-year old Mark Byron Crockett of
Roanoke.
Officers were called to the 2100
block of Holley Road early this
morning...Police say Crockett was shot
inside his brother-in-law's home and
was in the process of being transported
to the hospital by an acquaintance when
EMS crews were called in.
No information is being released on
his condition.

federal government needs to make sure
governors are kept in the loop.

As we approach the start of
hurricane season, Kaine says the
federal government must be careful
about possibly weakening the state's
ability to respond to state disasters.
He says Virginia relies heavily
on the guard to fight forest fires,
respond to floods and other disasters.
Virginia Guard officials say
they've not yet received any border
patrol mission orders, but say Virginia
guardsmen are trained to do the type of
work the federal government is looking
for.
There are currently about 500-
Army and Air National Guards men and
women deployed on federal missions.

National Football Foundation's College
hall of fame this afternoon.
The list of 13 includes Bobby
Bowden, Joe Paterno, Emmitt Smith,

1984 Virginia Tech Season Bruce Smith.
:00 The former Hokie had 46 career
sacks in Blacksburg and won the 1984
Outland Trophy.
In 1983 - he had an amazing 22
sacks in 11 games.
During his career under coach
Bill Dooley, Smith had 71 tackles
behind the line of scrimmage resulting
in losses of more than 500 yards.
The all-American later went on to
play for the Bills and Redskins before
retiring as the NFL's all-time sack
leader.

four year 20 thousand dollar
scholarship.

stay close to home in naming a
replacement for head basketball coach
Grant Smythers.
This afternoon superintendent
Wayne Tripp said he has recommended
that

VO-NAT former Salem and Hampden-Sydney
star Kevin Garst be appointed as the
new coach of the Spartans.
Formal approval from the school
board is expected on Tuesday of next
week.
Garst played on the 1994 state
championship team at Salem and later
went on to earn his bachelors degree
from Hampden-Sydney and his masters
from Virginia Tech.
For the past two years he's been
an assistant coach at Hampden-Sydney.

champs.

kickoff luncheon in Radford.
The Virginia High School League
reaches a milestone this year with its
5th year in the New River Valley.
That's the longest running agreement
between the VHSL and any of its
championship host site.

Richard Hatch.. the first survivor
to win one million dollars in the CBS
TV series... was sentenced today to
four years and three months in prison..
for not paying income taxes on his
winnings.
The 45 year old was convicted of
tax evasion not only on the prize
money.. but also on the 300 plus
thousand he earned as a Boston radio
host.
Hatch pleaded ignorance saying he
thought the show's producers would pay
his taxes.
