into a downtown Roanoke business.

At around 5:15 yesterday evening,
a deer broke through the window of a
room at Allergy and Asthma Associates.

Employees say they were sitting
up front and heard a crash...when they
went back to see what it was, found the
deer.

The deer was tranquilized and
because of its injuries from being hit
by a car and breaking two windows, it
was later transported to be put down.

The Game Warden tells us deer
don't see a window, only a brick wall
with a hole in it.

department was evacuated because of a
suspicious letter.

Yesterday, police say they got
a letter with threatening language and
a white, powdery substance on it.

Part of the building was
evacuated for about 45 minutes while
hazmat crews checked out the contents.

No arrests have been made.

students involved in last week's
paint-can throwing incident were
expelled.

VO-NAT Sean McGhee- -a senior at Cave


Spring- -was expelled outright.

Moses Moore was also expelled,
though his expulsion will be suspended
if he abides by the terms of a contract
with the Board.

If he stays out of trouble, he
may be allowed to graduate.

Brittany Goldberg will not be
expelled either.

The 17-year old Hidden Valley
High School Junior will be assigned to
some form of "alternative education"
program.

The three students were allegedly
caught throwing one-gallon cans of
paint off the roof of a New York Hotel
while on an art field trip May 7th.

he believes these people will be caught
by police.

department is staying on top of the

The news came on the same day New

location.

the country will pay tribute to law
enforcement officers who have died in
the line of duty.

Yesterday, the Roanoke Valley
remembered.

The service at St. Mark's
Lutheran Church honored seven Virginia
officers who gave their lives last
year, including Courtney Dickerson of
the Danville Police Department.

The roll call also included the
names of 27 Roanoke Valley officers
killed in the line of duty since 1892.

Master Trooper Darrell Bowling
paid tribute to the fallen officers,
and to his son Jon, a Martinsville
policeman and U-S Marine who died in
Iraq last year.

Memorial in Bedford.

An eight-foot, 620-pound bronze
statue of the Allied commander arrived
yesterday from Kansas.

The sculptor, Jim Brothers, had
already designed several other pieces
at the Memorial.

He sees the Eisenhower statue as
an important continuation in that
series.

The statue is an image of

Eisenhower captured in a famous
photograph taken the day before the
1944 Normandy invasion.

It shows Eisenhower talking with
a soldier about fly-fishing.

The D-Day Foundation says it
still needs to raise money to install
the busts of Eisenhower's Allied
commanders.

GRAPHIC=Flooding Roanoke's flood reduction plan is


moving along.

The first phase of the project
from the Vinton town limits to the
Ninth Street Bridge was completed in
March.

Workers will now widen the
Roanoke River from Ninth Street to the

Walnut Avenue Bridge.

But it will be at least until
2012 before the entire project is
completed to the Salem City Limits.

It also looks like the project
will now cost more than 65 million
dollars.
