Are Roanoke police doing enough
to find a killer?

The answer is "NO" --according to
one of those wounded in Saturday
morning's shooting AND the family of
the man *killed* by the gunfire.

Thompson- or "TJ" as he was known was
murdered.
Police report shots fired just
before three o'clock Saturday morning
on Melrose Avenue during a house party.
When authorities arrived,
Thompson was dead and seven other
people were wounded.
According to a search warrant,
one man was questioned after he tried
to run through a police perimeter and
officers spotted dried blood on his
shirt.

Eastbound traffic was backed up for
a four-car crash near the city limits
... that's when the driver of this
mini-van crashed into a flatbed trailer
carrying lumber.
She was flown to Lynchburg General
Hospital ... police have not released
her name.

delays in Southeast Roanoke this
afternoon.

The fire broke out in an abandoned
home in the 500 block of Elm Avenue
around 2:30 this afternoon.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy
flames and smoke. They had to bring
out a ladder truck to put the fire out.
No word on what caused the fire but
an investigative unit has been called
in.
Heavy smoke caused traffic backups on
Bullitt Avenue in both directions for
nearly a hour.

Danville students cope with the
aftermath of a weekend car crash that
killed three teenagers, one of them a
student at G-W Danville High School.

killed in a crash near Yanceyville
Saturday night.
State police say Holmes' car was
traveling around 65 to 70 miles an hour
when it ran off Hodges Dairy Road and
flipped.

dealership in Martinsville has died.

White Chevrolet was killed in an
accident Saturday night in North
Carolina.
Police say White was riding his
motorcycle on Route-220, just north of
Stoneville, when an S-U-V pulled into
his path and hit him.
He was thrown from the motorcycle
and died at the scene.
The 43-year-old was known for his
creative and often wacky commercials.

This morning, Roanoke police set
up a safety checkpoint along Eastern
Avenue, near 13th street.
They were mainly checking to see
if drivers were wearing their seat
belts as part of the national Click It
or Ticket campaign.
Police issued about 20-tickets
from today's checkpoint.
But, some drivers who passed, won
prizes like a watch from Hecht's or a
free coupon to Chick-Fil-A.

Montgomery County Courthouse for the
Police Memorial Ceremony.

baseball honors this afternoon and UVA
pitcher Sean Doolittle was named the
league's player of the year.

This Season Doolittle started all 56 games
:00 for the Cavaliers rotating between
first base and pitcher. The sophomore
lefty started 13 games on the mound for
the Cavaliers posting a record of 10-1
with a team-leading ERA of 1.90.
He also hit .318 with 63 hits in
198 at-bats.
Also, one of our own - former
Cave Spring star Tom Hagan has earned
first team all-ACC honors. Hagan is
8th in the entire ACC in batting with a
363 average.
He also drove in 29 runs this
season and successfully stole 19 of 20
bases for the Cavs.
Hagan and the Cavs open the ACC
tourney on Wednesday morning at 10
against Florida State in Jacksonville.

can to change that. Travis Wells has
the story of how Lickliter is helping
wounded troops through a program that

million dollars in his career. But
since the beginning of last year,
Lickliter has been giving some of those
winnings back, donating to the Wounded
Warrior Project based here in the
Roanoke Valley.
Now in it's third year, the
project assists veterans who have been
severely injured in the line of duty,
enabling them to readjust to civilian
life.

TRAVIS WELLS: Lickliter lives a pretty
good life out here on the PGA TOUR, but
he is quick to point out that freedom
isn't free.

The cause is one close to Lickliter's
heart. His grandfather fought in the
Spanish-American War, while his father
served in the Navy during the Cuban
missle crisis.
In the past three years, he has taken
trips to both South Korea and
Guantanamo Bay, playing golf and
offering lessons and equipment to the
troops.

Heath Calhoun is in charge of outreach
at Wounded Warrior. He's also a living
testimony to the work effect the
project is having.
