<< You ask five different experts
what a gang is and you'll most likely
get five different answers.

To some folks a gang is a group
of kids who constantly hang out and may
dress alike.

To someone else it's a group that
carries guns.

Ever since gunshots rang out on Melrose
Avenue, there's been a lot of talk
about gangs in Roanoke.

Aflred Trussell says they exist and he
was shot by one of them that night.

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ=All they're ALFRED TRUSSELL 4:11:14.00 ALL THEY'RE

LOOKING FOR IN THESE LITTLE BLACK

But longtime Roanoke resident Ron Smith
says he's never seen gang activity
here.

that around here in Roanoke. 14:17:27

RUN:07 (END SOT)

OQ=in roanoke.

Radford University Criminal Justice
Professor Tod Burke been studying gangs
for 15 years and has written numerous
articles on the topic. He says, no
matter what you call it, there seems to
be a problem.

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ=It's not just roanoke 11:10:00 IT'S NOT JUST ROANOKE. THIS

HAPPENS ANYWHERE. AND IT'S BEEN GOING
OUT OF THE CITIES AND IT'S BEEN GOING
INTO SUBURBAN AREAS AND RURAL AREAS.
:16

RUN:06 (END SOT)

OQ=rural areas.

For instance, Police in Galax are
keeping a close eye on graffiti. People
are writing messages about the MS-13
gang. Whether or not it's real is hard
to say. Burke says it could be wanna-be
gang members.

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ=I think sometimes 10:43:00 I THINK SOMETIMES THEY ARE

EVEN MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE TRUE GANGS
THAT ARE OUT THERE BECAUSE THEY DON'T
GO BY THE RULES OF GANGS AND THEY STILL
HAVEN'T ESTABLISHED THEIR ORGANIZATION.
:53

RUN:10 (END SOT)

OQ=organization.

Burke says the jury's still out on what
exactly is happening on the streets of
Roanoke, but he says police are in a
tough situation.

SOT FULL SOT FULL

INQ=It's very difficult BURKE: 18:37:00?? THEY HAVE TO

ESTABLISH FIRST DO WE REALLY HAVE A
GANG PROBLEM. IF THEY DO THEY WOULD
CERTAINLY WANT THE FUNDS. THEY WOULD
CERTAINLY WANT THE HELP, BUT THEY DON'T
WANT TO PUSH AN ALARM WHEN IN FACT ONE
DOESN'T EXIST. ::52

RUN:11 (END SOT)

OQ=doesn't exist.

Burke says if anything comes out of
this recent shooting, it's that people
are more openly discussing the issue
and that may lead to more of a focus on
fixing the problem. RD News 7.>>

Indians vs. Avalanche Another breezy night in the :00 valley although the conditions overall
were pretty nice last night.

The Avs got busy in the bottom of
the first inning as Neil Sellers smacks
one to left field. Bo Torbert will
motor around the bases and do his best
to get another run, and watch him slide
in under the tag to make it
2-to-nothing.

Still in the first, Mario Garza
gets a hold of this offering and just
cranks it out over the right *CG final Kinston field fence. The two run shot scores 1 Sellers and Salem gets the 6 to 1 win Salem over Kinston.

The Mountaineers came back in the
fifth as Robbie Andrews rips a shot to
right field, scoring Anthony Lowry from
third to trim the deficit to 4-3.

Still in the 5th, Kenny Farren
stands in and delivers a single to
right. Andrews and Jay Nagel race
across the plate giving the
Mountaineers the lead for good.

Andrews added another RBI in the
6th. Alleghany pulls off the upset
scoring 14 straight runs. *CG final Alleghany The final was 14 to 4. The Mounties 14 advance to the title game while Northside Northside can rest up for the 4 regionals.

Cavaliers vs. Terriers William Byrd and Lord Botetourt :00 hooked up in the second game.

We pick it up in the 4th, the
Terriers Jacob Branson has some trouble
with the bunt off the bat of Alan
Watts. Branson's throw to third gets
away allowing Mike Reed to cross the
plate, breaking a 1-all tie.

Still in the 4th, Jed Rasnick
comes up with a base knock thru the
right side of the infield. Emory
Straub chalks up another Cavalier run,
and it was 4-1 Botetourt.

But the Terriers answered in the
bottom half of the inning. Stephen
Dean doubles down the left field line,
and Lance Kennedy is on his horse for
home with the Terriers second run of
the game.

Coty Trivellin then drives *CG final Lord Botetourt in Dean with this shot back up the 7 middle. But it wasn't enough as William Byrd Botetourt shocks Byrd 7-to-4.
