(END SOT) Doctors are recommending that every

in line- to get the first vaccine to
prevent the painful condition:
shingles.

(vo)

The disease - which is characterized by
a blistering rash - affects nearly 1
million - mostly older adults every
year.

In large scale trials the vaccine not
only cut the number of cases in half..
it also reduced the severity of those
painful symptoms.

The FDA has just given its approval and
drug maker Merck plans to sell the
vaccine for about 150 dollars a dose.

(wipevo)

The World Health Organization is
delaying a decision on when to destroy
the world's last known stockpiles of
smallpox.

No treatment exists for the disease
that killed millions of people and left
many more blind and scarred.

Smallpox was officially eradicated in
1979 after a worldwide vaccination
campaign.

The U-S and Russia store remaining
virus samples and have resisted calls
to destroy them in case smallpox is

found to exist elsewhere.

(wipevo)

Researchers believe they may have found
the origin of AIDS.

Scientists studying the droppings of
wild apes in Cameroon found evidence a
chimpanzee group gave rise to the virus
that spread in humans across Africa and
eventually the world.

Their study, published in the journal
Science, supports other studies that
suggest people somehow caught the
deadly virus from chimpanzees, perhaps
by killing and eating them.

(END SOT) Doctors are recommending that every

healthy American age 60 and older get
in line- to get the first vaccine to
prevent the painful condition:
shingles.

(vo)

The disease - which is characterized by
a blistering rash - affects nearly 1
million - mostly older adults every

year.

In large scale trials the vaccine not
only cut the number of cases in half..
it also reduced the severity of those
painful symptoms.

The FDA has just given its approval and
drug maker Merck plans to sell the
vaccine for about 150 dollars a dose.

(wipevo)

The World Health Organization is
delaying a decision on when to destroy
the world's last known stockpiles of
smallpox.

No treatment exists for the disease
that killed millions of people and left
many more blind and scarred.

Smallpox was officially eradicated in
1979 after a worldwide vaccination
campaign.

The U-S and Russia store remaining
virus samples and have resisted calls
to destroy them in case smallpox is
found to exist elsewhere.

(wipevo)

Researchers believe they may have found
the origin of AIDS.

Scientists studying the droppings of
wild apes in Cameroon found evidence a
chimpanzee group gave rise to the virus

that spread in humans across Africa and
eventually the world.

Their study, published in the journal
Science, supports other studies that
suggest people somehow caught the
deadly virus from chimpanzees, perhaps
by killing and eating them.
