The long winter's nap is over for
the local bear population. Those
who've been visited by bears this week
are getting a little anxious.

JEAN'S MIC HOT For the last two weeks an adult
black bear has been prowling around the
Oney Addition neighborhood on Forest
Hill Drive just South of Pearisburg.

It's been turning over trash cans
and some neighbors say... getting a
little too close for comfort.

This is a picture of the bear, behind
the wheel of a car. A neighbor had left
her groceries inside. The bear ate a
loaf of bread and a honeybun.

They say it's time for this bear to go.

catch him, they'll drive him a few
miles away to the Jefferson National
forest.

Before they release him, they may
also give him some pepper spray to
build up his fear of humans so he won't
go wandering into anymore
neighborhoods, anytime soon.

QUESTION: We've heard about a few bears
popping into residential areas lately.
Is this pretty common, this time of
year?

It is, the biologists tell me the bears
are just getting out of their dens,
they're hungry; and their normal meals,
nuts and berries, are not ripe yet.

A Peacock has been wandering
around route 460 in Narrows all day.

People started calling animal
control about the bird this morning
after it was seen flying across the
road.

Officers tried to capture it, but
they say it was way too quick for them.

They don't know who it belongs to
or how it got there.

They say the bird isn't bothering
anyone, so they plan to leave the
animal alone for now.

they seized in their investigation of
drivers' licenses issued to Hispanic
residents.

Latin Corner: numerous I-D cards from
various states, blank I-D card stock,
blank forms for International Driver's
Licenses and applications ready to send
to the I-R-S for individual taxpayer

The Latin Corner is one of three
businesses on Williamson Road in
Roanoke that cater to Hispanic
residents.

Police raided the stores Friday,
searching for evidence of bogus
documents being issued to Latinos.

arrested for a Memorial Day shooting in
Danville.

Police say Derrick Shante
Walden of Danville shot a woman Monday
afternoon on Monroe Street. Walden's
been charged with Aggravated Malicious
Wounding and use of a firearm.

The woman, who has not been
identified by police, was wounded in
her left side.

the race.


Whitey Taylor says Hedrick, has
been barred from the speedway.

who all say Beckner was NOT hit by that
car.

class acts has decided he will retire
after the 2006 season.

Martinsville 28 seasons and coached the
likes of Heisman trophy finalist Shawn
Moore, Nikki Fisher and P.J. Preston
will coach in 2006 and then step away
from the game that has consumed most of
his adult life.

Edwards is just four wins away
from reaching the 200 win mark for his
career.

He has 196 victories, 11
districts titles, 7 regional crowns and
the 1988 state championship to his
credit. He was our coach of the year
in 1987.

GRAPHIC=ODU LOGO Old Dominion is resurrecting its


football program after an absence of
nearly 70 years. The plans call ODU to
have a team in place by the fall of
2009. The Monarchs will come right
out the box as a Division One Double A
school and play in the Colonial
Conference. The school's 95 thousand
alumni made it happen with
contributions of nearly $6 million
dollars.

first verbal commitment of the summer
as far as football is concerned.

Quille (QUILL-EE) Odom, a six-one
and 200 pound linebacker prospect from
Osbourn Park high school in Manassas
has decided to play his football with
the Hokies.

Odom was recruited by Syracuse,
Marshall and JMU among others.

He is the first commitment for
new Tech secondary coach Torrian Gray.

field by Louisville Slugger.

The ACC's pitcher and player of

the year was 26 and 9 this season. She
struck out just under 14 batters a game
which ranks her second in the nation.

A finance major, Tincher has a
3.8 GPA.
