GRAPHIC=News7 @ 11 Across the city of Roanoke today,

gang activity and violence was a hot
topic .

Roanoke's Police Chief even showed up
at a community forum to address the
issue.

We'll hear more from him in a moment.

Meanwhile, residents in one Roanoke
neighborhood have had enough and police
are moving in to help them breathe
easier.

make up the VIPER Task Force, targeting
violent crimes...And members spent the
afternoon visiting five high crime
areas in Roanoke...Their message is
clear...police can help and encourage
any reports of crime including gang
activity. An issue that has taken the
spotlight in the area after eight
people were shot in one of the task
force's targeted areas, the Melrose
Corridor.

BM --9:27:29-41 i've been in several
cities, gang issues you can't walk the
streets....it may come to that in
Roanoke, we're not there yet, Roanoke,

still a safe place but we don't want to
come there either

Afton Gardens, formerly part of Lincoln
Terrace, is also one of the targeted
areas..but a new management group has
joined the fight against crime....

DP --9:17:57 it was a big party here,
big block party, activity you could
stand here and watch it

But just three weeks after taking over
the property, residents have noticed a
calm come over the
neighborhood...mainly due to security
guards posted at the complex 24 hours a
day.

DP --9:18:14 two weeks ago, first time
residents were allowed to bring their
children out, certain members of the
community would scare them back in

Debbie admits while there are still
problems, including threats against her
and the company things are getting
better and there are great plans for
the neighborhood.>>
