meeting last night.

forum at Pilgrim Baptist Church in
Northwest.

It was organized by several local
ministers to come up with ways to deal
with violence in Roanoke.

At times, the meeting was
passionate, confrontational, and eye
opening.

There was also plenty of debate
on whether there are actual gangs in
Roanoke.

programs, holding a march through the
streets, and to have more involvement

by local churches.

what residents in one neighborhood have
been going through for years.

make up the VIPIR Task Force, targeting
violent crimes...And members spent the
afternoon visiting five high crime
areas in Roanoke...Their message is
clear...police can help and encourage
any reports of crime including gang
activity. An issue that has taken the
spotlight in the area after seven
people were shot in one of the task
force's targeted areas, the Melrose
Corridor.

streets....it may come to that in
roanoke, we're not there yet, roanoke,

still a safe place but we dont' want to
come there either

Afton Gardens, formerly part of Lincoln
Terrace, is also one of the targeted
areas..but a new management group has
joined the fight against crime....

stand here and watch it

But just three weeks after taking over
the property, residents have noticed a
calm come over the
neighborhood...mainly due to security
guards posted at the complex 24 hours a
day.

residents were allowed to bring their
children out, certain members of the
community would scare them back in

Debbie admits while there are still
problems, including threats against her
and the company things are getting
better and there are great plans for
the neighborhood. >>

morning sent one Roanoke woman to the
hospital.

It occurred on Roanoke Boulevard
at around 2:30 AM.

A car driven by thirty-five-year
old Teresa Radford ran off the road and
struck a tree.

Radford was sent to Roanoke
Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the accident is
still under investigation.

Police had to direct traffic near

apparently hit a tree, sending pieces
of the trunk in all directions.

This is the work of artists from town.

It's all about the extreme
weather across the globe this week.
First to the heat.

VO NAT The city of Phoenix tied a record
high yesterday, reaching 110 degrees.
Heat advisories have been issued for
the entire weekend. Folks are being
advised to limit outdoor activities and
stay hydrated.

VO NAT Lightning from a series of storms
moving across the Mid-Atlantic struck a
Maryland church yesterday.

The storms were part of a cold front
approaching the region. Lightning also
struck two golfers in Illinois. The two
tried to seek cover under a tree when
the storm came through. The two men did
survive.

VO NAT Heavy rains have drenched a
southern Chinese province Guangdong,
leaving 22 people dead and forcing the
evacuation of 50-thousand people.
Nearly 8 inches of rain has fallen over
the past few days, with more expected
this week. The rains have destroyed
about 23-thousand homes and caused 65.4
million US dollars worth of damage.
