The demolition of Victory Stadium
could begin by the middle of June,
perhaps as early as next week.

The city has also also apparently
cleared a hurdle that some had hoped
would prevent demolition of Victory
Stadium.

Today, Council authorized the
mayor to execute an agreement that will
release Roanoke from restrictions that
were placed on the property when the
railroad deeded the land to the city in
1941.

death of a patient at the V-A Medical
Center in Salem last night.

Two men were having supper in the day
room of Ward two in Building eight.
The dispute over a carton of milk,
escalated as the two patients began
holding and pushing each other.
Medical staff were called to break it
up.
As William Henry Macki was struggling
against those trying to hold him down,
he started turning blue.
Twenty-four minutes later Macki was
declared dead.

of death as natural, pending toxicology
tests.
Dr. Delmar Short of the V-A Hospital
staff says Macki had a heart condition.
Dr. Short believes the 41-year old
veteran from Montvale may have suffered
a heart attack during the struggle.

GRAPHIC=Fatal Accident Two people were killed this
weekend in separate auto accidents.
Last night a Danville woman died,
crashing her car into a utility pole.
Police say 28-year-old Angelia
Dianne Howell was heading west on
Westover Drive around 11:15 when she
lost control.
Authorities are looking into
whether speed or alcohol were factors
in that crash.
In Rockbridge County,
52-year-old, Steve Hintze (HINT-zee)
was killed near the intersection of
Routes 11 and 130 Saturday night.
Police say he pulled in front of
another vehicle, and was struck on the
driver's side.

convenience store this afternoon
injured one man and has police
searching for suspects.

Few details have been released, but
it apparently happened outside the
Apple Market on Wards Road around 3:30.
One man was shot in the side ... he
and his brother then drove to a parking
lot near the Fort Avenue Flea Market
and stopped to ask someone for help.
The victim's been taken to
Lynchburg General Hospital.
Police are checking the store's
security video to see whether the
suspects were caught on tape.

Friday Chief Joe Gaskins made those comments
during an interview with News 7 on

Gaskins was at a community meeting
set up by local church leaders to
address the gang issue in Roanoke.
The forum was held in response to the

heat from community leaders who say he

Machine that won 2 World Series Title.
In Lexington Griffey was switch hitting
on the golf course to help out the
College Orientation Workshop Program.

The C-O-W summer program is held
in Lexington at the Virginia Military
Institute for at-risk Minority Male
Students in High school. It includes
Academic Instruction, physical
training, Counseling, and Self-esteem
Development based on the V-M-I
Educational mold. The Program was
founded by Gene Williams 20 years ago.

This is the second year for the
C-O-W Golf tournament fund-raiser, one
of the golfers was Rich Borden who
played with his 2 sons. Borden who is
from the Bronx is a graduate of the
program.

36 hole US Open qualifying at Summit,
New Jersey today with 152 men.
She is trying to earn one of just
18 spots in the Open.

U.S. Open Qualifying Wie positioned herself to become
:00 the first woman to qualify for the U.S.
Open, by shooting a 2-under-par 68 in
her first round this morning. It
marked the first bogey-free round for
Wie in a tournament against men.
The 16 year old from Hawaii has
been pretty steady all day. She is one
over par on her second round, one under
overall and right now in serious
jeopardy of not earning one of those 18
spots.

athlete from the Roanoke Valley.
Adam Hart, the all Western Valley
district catcher from Patrick Henry has
will attend Hampden-Sydney next season
and play for the Tigers.

This Season Hart hit 320 this season
splitting time between catcher and
short stop. He stole 20 ot 21 bases.
As a junior he hit 364 and was a four
year starter on the varsity at Patrick
Henry.
Hart hopes to play as a freshman
