o'clock.
The 27-year-old pleaded guilty to
the 1996 murders of three Danville
residents.
A federal judge in Norfolk
granted a temporary stay yesterday that
was later rejected by the Fourth U-S
Circuit Court of Appeals.

Kendrick, the elderly couple shot and

conflicted over the murder of her two
friends.

Cox says they will handle each

And the company says it will rely
on its reputation to not only keep
customers from leaving, but to also
attract new customers.

with Carilion Roanoke Memorial's new
smoking policy.

On June first, Carilion
implemented the policy that requires
employees to leave the property to
smoke.
They must now cross the street to
an area underneath the Jefferson Street
Bridge.
Justin Jacobson doesn't smoke,
but says he's concerned for employees
who take their breaks late at night.
Patients and visitors are still
allowed to smoke in designated areas on
hospital property, but in time, the new
smoking rules will apply to everyone.

budget.

Governor Tim Kaine returned from
New York yesterday evening where he and
two budget conferees met with the
state's bonding agencies.
He says the companies are pleased
with the health of the state's economy,
but are watching budget talks closely.
If there's no deal by July first,
the governor assured them the state
will not shut down.
He remains optimistic that the
legislature will be able to get the job
done.

GRAPHIC=Hooker Plant Closing Hundreds of jobs will be lost
when Hooker Furniture closes its
Roanoke plant.

Hooker Furniture has owned the
plant located in Southeast Roanoke
since 1981.
Currently, it makes executive
office furniture and home theater
cabinets.
The reason for the plant's
closure is simple: a declining demand
for its wood furniture made in the U.S.
About 275 employees will lose
their jobs, that represents about
20-percent of the company's total
workforce.
Employees were notified about the
closure yesterday around three o'clock.
The plant will remain open until
mid-August.
Company officials say each
employee will receive some sort of
severance package.
