The groups all do their part to

can be retired, which means it is

Federal law stipulates many
aspects of flag etiquette.

The flag should be lighted at all
times, either by sunlight or by an

Flags should be flown in fair
weather, unless they are designed for
inclement weather.

Also, when the flag is lowered,
no part of it should touch the ground
or any other object. It should be
received by waiting hands and arms.

GRAPHIC=none Today is Flag Day.

It is a nationally recoginzed day
that's importance is not widely
understood.

TOSS ACROSS=Bob and Kim Toss to Bob

Bob Grebe is here to shed some

light on the subject.

LIVE=Bob Full at BAM LIVE FULL

*CG standup Bob Grebe
bgrebe@wdbj7.com Depending on which source you
find, it is believed Flag Day dates
back to 18-85 and a schoolhouse in
Fredonia, Wisconsin.

We know for certain that 57-years
ago, President Harry Truman signed an
Act of Congress designating June 14th
as National Flag Day.

The date symbolizes the
anniversary of the Flag Resolution of
17-77 which adopted The Stars and
Stripes as the official flag.

Today, organizations like the
American Legion, the Elks, and the VFW
among others recognize Flag Day each
year.

The groups all do their part to
make sure the disposal of unserviceable
flags is done in a proper manner.

That happens two ways -- The flag
can be retired, which means it is
folded and placed in a display case

never to be flown again.

The second way is the dignified
disposal of a flag where it is
rendered, or burned, by an authorized
organization -- preferably on Flag Day.

FLAG GO ON THE GROUND. EVERYONE KNOWS
YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO THROW A FLAG IN
THE TRASH, THAT THERE'S SOME DISPOSAL
METHOD. VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW THE
AMERICAN LEGION IS ONE OF THE
AUTHORIZED PLACES TO ACTUALLY DISPOSE
OF THE FLAG. WE HAVE A CEREMONY FOR
IT. WE ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BRING THEM
BY. WE HAVE VERY FEW FLAGS THESE DAYS.
MOST OF THE FLAGS THAT WE DISPOSE OF
ARE OUR FLAGS." (04.14)

Other flag facts to consider --
Federal law stipulates many aspects of
flag etiquette.

The flag should be lighted at all

times, either by sunlight or by an
appropriate light source.

Flags should be flown in fair
weather, unless the flag is designed
for inclement weather.

And it should not be printed on
items intended to be discarded after
temporary use.

LIVE=Bob FULL LIVE FULL

Also, when the flag is lowered,
no part of it should touch the ground
or any other object. It should be
recieved by waiting hands and arms.
TOSS ACROSS SHOT (Toss back to Kim)

To store the flag it should be
folded neatly and ceremoniously.
