GRAPHIC=Shooting A Danville man is in critical


condition after receiving a gunshot
wound to the head.

Police were called to the 500
block of Elizabeth Street around 11
o'clock last night.

When they arrived, they found a
23-year-old man unresponsive.

The victim was taken to Duke
University Medical Center.

Danville Police are
investigating.

So far no charges have been
filed.

Roanoke jury has awarded two million
dollars to the family of 4-year-old
Justin Simmons.

The jury found a lawnmower
manufacturer was responsible for the
accident, that killed Simmons two years
ago.

are working to turn plans for an
Aquatic Center into a reality.

Workers have been using heavy
equipment lately to prep these 17 acres
of land for building.

The Aquatic Center was supposed
to be built by Fall 2007, but town
officials do not have a contractor or
blueprints yet.

Last year town officials took out
a bond to cover the 11-12 million

Terpenny says if Virginia Tech
decides not to contribute, the town
will build a more traditional facility.

improve some services for residents.

The company had just completed
the first part of the contract when it
went bankrupt.

mean dozens of road projects get
delayed.

The Commonwealth Transportation
Board is scheduled to approve the
state's six- year "road improvement
plan" today.


Since there's no budget -- the
plan is based on revenue estimates from
November, which aren't up to date.

The cost of supplies has gone up
and that's putting some projects on a
back burner.

In the Salem District some of
those projects include safety
enhancements along Interstate 81, the
widening of Route 221 in Bedford and
several urban projects in Blacksburg
and Radford.

institution.

Governor Tim Kaine ceremonially
signed legislation marking the
distinction yesterday.

N-C-I will function as a higher
education facility offering programs
through existing colleges and
universities.

But, with no state budget in
place, getting funding could be a
problem.

In the meantime, the Institute
says it will use its current funding to
launch a pilot program this fall.

Courses will be offered at
Patrick Henry Community College and the
Shumate-Jessie building in uptown
Martinsville.
