(END SOT) A goose from a backyard flock in Canada

has tested positive for bird flu.

(vo)

The flock lives on the western end of
Prince Edward Island.

The case is the first of its kind in
North or South America.

Health officials say they are
monitoring for any flu-like symtoms or
eye infections in those who have come
in contact with domestic or wild birds
in the area.

According to the Association of
American Medical Colleges.. a dwindling
number of new doctors may be the next

big American health crisis.

Until recently, most in the medical
community believed managed health care
would reduce patient demand and create
a 'doctor surplus'.. so medical schools
limited admissions.. and Congress
reduced Medicare funding for residency
programs.

But one study found by 2020 the U-S
will be short 85-thousand doctors.

The association is recommending a 30%
increase in the capacity of medical
schools to prepare physicians for
future practice.

Coffee giant Starbucks may be the next
target for a consumer-health group.

The Center for Science in the Public
Interest says it s planning to campaign
against the global cafi chain.

The group says Starbucks high-calorie
and high fat products increase the risk
of obesity, heart disease and cancer.

A Starbucks spokesman said the company
is researching alternatives to high-fat
products.

have the state's highest suicide rates.

The Virginia Department of Health
says Buchanan County had the highest
suicide rate of 25 per 100-thousand
people from 1998 to 2002.

That's more than double the state
average of eleven.

Scott, Russell, Wise and Lee
counties rounded out the top five
localities all with suicides exceeding
21 per 100-thousand.

Some experts think rural counties
see the highest suicide rates because
of a combination of economic stress and
increased drug use.
