will help fund a major makeover for
Carilion Health System-- which also
includes a name change and a
partnership with Virginia Tech.

A source close to Carilion says
the hospitals will remain in place, but
the holding company will become known
as Carilion Clinic.
The system will focus on
attracting top talent, bringing in
specialists with national reputations
to chair its departments.
With more than 100- million
dollars committed over six years, the
plan calls for new buildings in the
Riverside Centre, and a new research
institute that will be a 50/50 venture
with Virginia Tech.

Leaders say the plan has the

moved into Victory Stadium and the
tributes continue outside.

A front end-loader arrived before
lunch, and a crane with a wrecking ball
is expected tomorrow.
Crews will remove wooden
bleachers and other materials
underneath the stands before actual
demolition begins, perhaps early next
week.
Last night, Franklin County
Speedway Owner Whitey Taylor and others
who remember racing in Roanoke, placed
a wreath on the fence.

GRAPHIC=Businss News FreightCar America has received
an order to build 16-hundred coal cars
for Norfolk Southern.

February Starting early next year, the
company will build the cars at its
Roanoke plant in what WAS Norfolk and
Western's East End Shops.
Norfolk Southern has ordered 400
aluminum coal cars and 12-hundred cars
of a new design that uses both aluminum
and stainless steel.
The companies haven't revealed
the price tag on the cars.

favor of closing down parts of two
downtown streets.

People on both sides of the
issue came out to lend an opinion at
Monday night's city council meeting.
The debate was WHERE the new
Social Security Building should go.
There is a site plan to build a new
facility on the corner of First Street
and Wells Avenue.
After the Oklahoma bombing,
regulations were put into place,
mandating all federal buildings be at
least 50-100 feet away from open roads
with vehicular traffic.
So the new building would mean
parts of First Street and Loudon Avenue
be permanently closed.
The Planning Commission voted
not to recommend this be done, saying
it wasn't consistent with the vision
for the area.
That was a concern echoed by
residents in opposition.
While the Developer argued by
placing the new building there, it
would bring people to that area, and
therefore would be able to support any
future retail or restaurants.

closer to being a done deal.

The Senate yesterday voted
unanimously in favor of the 74- billion
dollar spending plan.
The plan includes NO debt-
something Senate conferees pushed for.
An historic amount of money was
put toward new construction projects at
state colleges and universities.
College faculty and other state
employees will get a seven- percent
raise over the next two years.
Teachers will get a five- and- a-
half- percent raise.
State delegates will consider the
deal tomorrow before handing it over to
Governor Tim Kaine who gets to make
amendments.
Meanwhile, the special session
will continue as lawmakers debate how
to improve Virginia's transportation
system.

Bedford is still under investigation.

Firefighters got to the Hunan
Chinese Restaurant around five o'clock
yesterday morning.
A police officer had spotted
smoke coming from the building.
By the time firefighters got
there, they encountered heavy smoke and
flames inside the restaurant.
Fire officials say the structure
of the building is still standing.
But the fire caused extensive
damage inside the building.
No other buildings were damaged.

in a fall in Martinsville may never
fully recover.

VO-NAT 48-year-old Michael Hinsberger
HINES-burger survived the 30-foot fall
that killed his boss, 60-year-old
Gregory Harrington.
The two had finished installing
an antenna on this radio tower, when
the cable they were being lowered on...
apparently broke.
Hinsberger is still recovering in
a hospital in North Carolina, but his
family says he may never have full use
of his brain again.

completed the FIELD part of the
investigation, but the case must
undergo further review in Richmond,

23-year-old Mark Alan King of
Madision Heights was arrested
yesterday.
He is being held without bond at

is fighting the allegations that it
violated alcoholic-beverage control
laws.

Last Month Attorneys for Mango's Bar and
Grill yesterday filed an appeal with
the A-B-C board.
The restaurant was charged with
10 alcohol violations -- following an
investigation into whether it served
alcohol to customers who were
intoxicated.
Mango's owners had the option of
paying a 25-thousand dollar fine or
have their alcohol license suspended
for up to 30-days.
A hearing date for the appeal has
NOT been scheduled yet.
