there's anything they can do to
override a decision by City Council..

Nearly a decade ago, citizens agreed
that it would be nice to revitalize
Henry Street.

VO-NAT Ten years later, the Dumas Building

is being transformed into a cultural
center, and a culinary insitute will
set up shop across the street.

And soon, a new Social Security
Administration Building on First Street
and Wells Avenue.

But because of government
regulations, City Council had to first
approve the closure of part of Loudon
Avenue and First Street, which it did
Monday night, against the will of the
Planning Commmission and some
residents.

been waiting quite some time for
something to come in and it's time to

As for the building where the Social
Security Administration currently is,

the landlord tells us he already has
two or three interested parties,
although he wouldn't tell us who they
are, he did say the space would still

Patrolman David Rickman was on a
domestic disturbance call when he was
shot in the arm.

The bullet traveled into his
chest at an area where his
protective-vest did not cover.

Officers are safer today because
his death prompted the department to
start using vests that offer more
coverage.

Officer Chris Atkins says other
advancements include training that
works to instill instincts in the
recruits to prepare them for the
incidents they will see or experience
on the street.

It's the combination of mental
preparation, experience and training

Virginia Regional Jail.

The new facility near Dixie Caverns
will house inmates for Salem, as well
as Montgomery, Franklin and Roanoke
Counties.

It's supposed to alleviate the
overcrowded conditions in three other
jails.

Roanoke County Sheriff Gerald Holt says
the facility will hold 805 inmates -

Patrolman John Leverett was serving a
warrant while leading a man out of his
home.

The suspect was able to get a
handgun out of a drawer and shot the
officer.

Patrolman Leverett died from the
wound, June 21st, 1916.

That was nine decades ago. It's
been a little over 20 years since the
latest Roanoke City Police Officer was
killed by gunfire.

Patrolman David Rickman was died
from a single shot serving a domestic
disturbance call.

The bullet traveled through his
arm and into his chest at a spot where
his bullet-proof vest did not cover.

Since then, technical
improvements have been made to the
protective vests -- In both the
materials used and the coverage area.

Another improvement has been made

in the progression of the training
officers get to help better prepare
them for dangerous situations.

southwest Roanoke County.

Kahn Development officials say the
upscale retail and office center will
have a Bonefish Grill restaurant and a

and possibly an anchor supermarket.

The center could be ready by not this

particular, hand, foot and mouth

Guard Armory yesterday. This is the

Workers also removed the

A wrecking ball is expected on
site today and demolition of the brick

The bullet traveled into his

nearly 90-units at Hannah Court Mobile
Home Park for city improvements.

About half will be used to widen
the Roanoke River to reduce flooding.

The city says it will work with
residents to find equivalent housing.
