to retire, a Roanoke County school
principal has found a new assignment
for himself.

Blevins was already set to
retire as principal of Hidden Valley
High School at the end of this month
when three county students were accused
of throwing paint cans off of a hotel
roof while on a school sponsored field
trip.
At last night's school board work
session he presented a proposal which
would have him setting up field trip
travel plans for county teachers.
Blevins says the idea would
ensure safety and consistency.

guests are causing quite a stir.

The owners haven't come forward,

are going up five- dollars.
Fees haven't increased in nearly
20- years, but the cost of doing
business at the Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries has.
State law says fees can not go up
again for another three years.
Also starting next month licenses
will be good for one year after they're

printed on one piece of paper.

improve its disaster response plan.

And under federal guidelines, all
communities are supposed to update
their disaster plan every five years.
Officials say they're now working
on the revisions, which include a
recommendation from the federal
government to develop a
standar-di-zation of resources.

resources.

aren't too happy about their car tax
bill.

The city council voted to change
its formula for the car tax.
Instead of paying five point
seven five percent based on the car's
loan value, the city is charging its
residents a dollar more per hundred.
They now pay SIX point seven five
percent, and the value is based on the
average retail value of the car.
Some residents' bills have more
than doubled.
By comparison....Roanoke taxes
nearly three and a half percent based
on loan value, and Lexington taxes
almost four percent on loan value.
The city of Covington charges
five point six percent based on half of
the retail value.

brought her into the public spotlight.
Now a Radford woman is in the
news again, after losing her battle
with cancer.

Katherine Kitty Irwin had
fought breast cancer for more than six
years.
Irwin was a church leader and
teacher.
She may be best known for her
impassioned pleas to the court to spare
the life of her daughter's killer.
15-year-old Tara Munsey
disappeared in 2000 and was found dead
two weeks later.
Irwin who was 56 is
survived by a husband and son.
