city's ongoing flood reduction plan.

The city just finished widening
the Roanoke River along Riverland Road
and 9th Street in March -- to help
reduce flooding.

Residents in the area say the water
level is several feet higher than it
was yesterday.

The rushing water has pushed
debris up next to the bridge, forcing

yards.

for the week after high waters forced
the facility to evacuate last night.

The school will remain open,

GRAPHIC=Layoffs Lewis-Gale Medical Center has laid

off several off its employees.

A spokeswoman for Lewis-Gale says 41
positions were eliminated, but eleven
of them were already vacant.

She says this is just a small portion
of the medical center's workforce.

The Medical Center employs
15-hundred people.

Lewis-Gale says the positions that
were cut did not involve direct patient
care.

The spokeswoman says the layoffs are
an effort to make the best use of its
resources.

The employees have been given
severance packages. Some will be
offered positions through third party
contractors or they will be eligible to
apply for other positions within
Lewis-Gale.

Survivors say it took only 4 to 5
seconds.....for two floors of an old

building in Clinton, Missouri to give
way during an Elks Club meeting

Monday night.

"All of a sudden the 2nd floor fell and
within a spilt second of that,

the 3rd floor fell on top of the 2nd
floor."

"I was looking at 6, 8, 10 of my fellow
Elks and they just disappeared

into the floor."

Ten of about 50 lodge members were
trapped in the rubble of the historic

building....overnight nine were pulled
out alive. Some victims used

cell phones to help rescuers find them.

"I just pulled my father out, he's

alive and is doing well."

The club's president was found dead
tuesday morning. Members say

Tony Komer was on the third floor of
the building practicing a speech

while the main group was finishing
dinner on the 2nd floor.

was so bad, you couldn't see

where you were going."

The nine people rescued were all taken
to local hospitals. ..most with

minor injuries from falling debris.
so far investigators have not

given an exact cause for the collapse.
The disaster came as the Elks

Lodge was marking a major milestone,
its one hundred year anniversary.

Canyon's North Rim remain stranded,
after a wildfire jumped a road leading
to the park.

This fire is close to Zion National
